Discovering issues with "finished" games (start of a 3 day weekend repair log inside)

It is finally cool here in central Texas and it is past time to dive into the garage for some cleaning and organizing. Right off the bat I found a bunch of little problems with my garage crew. Time to see how much I can get done in three days.

Xybots, Assault, and Toobin all needed replacement rear fan covers. I had some old server fan covers that looked nice (done).

Xybots rear needs to be sanded and painted black. I thought I had addressed the water damage to this cab long ago, but it seems I am not done yet.

Toobin's waterfall was stuck, traced the problem down to rubbing wires, moved 'em around (done).

Assault has a crushed JAMMA connector...barely serviceable. The game is playable, but this needs to be cut out and replaced.

My SFII Champion Ed. conversion developed board problems. I fixed that with spare parts and my EPROM burner. At power up, I noticed the red is being overdriven, so that gets pulled out next. It still needs a coin door.

I have hopes to find a small gutted cab to rehab and turn into a working conversion game. This year has been especially light on anything arcade related and I'd like to change that. Since it is near Halloween, I have a soft spot towards making a Splatterhouse conversion on a shoestring budget. Easy, simple, horizontal JAMMA, and I think an art package has been made. Heck I have the board and a K4600 that's sitting around. I'd love to see the Japan flyer turned into side art. Stupid idea?

If you have the board then most of the work is already done.

yep, and I am even prepared to gut my test rig to make a Splatterhouse conversion. It has everything: JAMMA harness, controls, switcher, ISO, monitor, etc. I guess I just need to find a suitable tiny cab, and convince the Ms. that I need one last cab...that's the hard part. And to find a spot for it in the garage/house (which is why it needs to be small).

Poker cabinet should do. I have one here that I am about to install a jamma/1 slot neo geo harness into.

Today's tally:

Adjustable shelving kicked to the curb to make way for a future cab for Splatterhouse. Time to nicely ask friendly local collectors to help locate a gutted horizontal cab that needs a good home and takes a 19". I would like to see what tbbk does with the poker machine, I've seen them, but I never could figure out how to do a CP for one.

Galaga repainted, looks much better. The "restorer" that had this cab before also latex painted the coin door. Thanks buddy! I'll have to go through that next along with some fresh T-molding and I'll be done.

Back of Xybots sanded, bondo'd and freshly painted black. Much better, it no longer feels like it will fall apart. Also cleaned the bezel and screen.

Painted the bases of Assault and Toobin black.

Maybe something will come up in the next few months? Last time I looked at CL it was pretty hard to come up with a cab for anything. Same story, free and gone or $four figures. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for a gutted but solid cab project.....maybe a collector or op will run out of room soon?

Hell yea to cool weather. And this guy just started vacation :)

Silly girlfriend asked what my plans were...

Sounds like some good progress made. I am in Austin, so I know what you mean about finally being able to comfortably work out in the garage. Recently found a cocktail cabinet that was an original Pacman. Unfortunately the board inside is now Galaxian and the monitor had severe Burger Time burn in.

I am currently working on fixing up the cabinet itself. The base was completely falling apart and there is some laminate damage. Will be my project for the near future.

Good luck with all of yours.

Alright, the new layout is a success and I will be able to add one more standard sized 19" cab to my lineup. Whenever one comes up, that will make me the proud owner of 20 rehabilitated cabinets to call my own. I have no idea what I would have to do if forced to move with these beasts; that's a lot of games (and my hard work into each of them).

Anyhow, I had a rodent problem earlier in the year. They never got into the games that I can see. I put down traps, but they never did any good, and I think the neighborhood cat ended up eating them. Today I found their hiding place, behind some of my remaining storage cabinets. Yuck! I put on safety glasses, leather gloves, and a respirator and cleaned it up with a shop vac. And then quickly dumped it and blew out the shop vac with compressed air. Nasty stuff. Looks to have cleaned up great, no stains. Looked to be a lot of eaten acorns, dead leaves, and droppings. I'm wondering if I should hit it with some Windex or just leave well enough alone.

The garage needs more work yet, next to be Craigslisted will be a children's desk and I think I'll be able to free up even more space. Feels good to get rid of this junk.

No overlay or bezel yet, but here is what it looks like so far. Going to to fill the hole where the bill acceptor used to be with a speaker and grill.

Of course I only got this poker cabinet because it had the basic shape of an Asteroids cabaret and not the mostly vertical panel that many of them have.
