Agreed. If you are going to discharge one monitor and never touch one again, then use a screw driver. If you are going to do any real monitor work at all, get a HV probe.
+1 to this. I was told this a long time ago when I did my first monitor discharge, and I was a cheapass and did the screwdriver thing. That is, until I needed to work on a vector monitor. Then I had to get a high voltage probe. Had I just listened to people who were giving me GOOD advice back then, I could have patiently waited to find a good deal on one on the 'bay.
