A question about substituting diodes. I'm adding diodes to a connector on a pin. I looked in my box of goodies and I have a package of 1N914 1N4148 switching diodes. The repair guide says to use 1N4004. Would the 1N914 1N4148's be an acceptable sub?

When it comes to diodes, there's 3 main things to consider:

- how fast do they act
- what voltage are they rated (max)
- what current are they rated (max)

If your voltage/current is higher than the diode you use, you'll fry it.

So you're the only one that can answer your question by examining the circuit you're building and seeing if 1N4148 limits are higher than working values.

Well if you can wait like 2 weeks you can get like 25 from china with free shipping for .99c on eBay. You might just want to buy like $3 worth just to have a few spares on hand for future breakdowns.

???

All electronic components are made there now.

When I purchase on ebay I always search N. America or I don't order. As for being made in China...whats not? If I buy from Radio Shack, at least I'm partially keeping the money home. Sometime there's no choice in the matter.

The 4004's
Peak Reverse Voltage: 400V (Max)
DC Blocking Voltage: 400VDC (Max)
Forward Rectified Current: 1A
Silicon Rectifier
Diffused junction
Maximum Average Forward Voltage Drop: VF= 0.8 Volts
Non-repetitive Peak Surge Current: IFSM= 30 amps for 1 cycle
Maximum Reverse Current @ 25 degrees C: IR= 10uA

The 1N4148's

N914/1N4148-type. Used mostly for logic. Switching time can be decreased to 4nS. Low power.

You are partially keeping the money home? Yeah, you are paying the middle man is cut. And he thanks you....... I buy direct from China all the time, only thing that sucks is the wait time. And alot of times when I order IC's from ebay/China i can't find them anywhere else in small quantities. I don't LIKE giving China money. But it is a fact of life these days.

If you want to keep the diode the "same"......most Radio Shack's still stock 1N4007's. This is the same as the 1N4004, except it's rated at a higher voltage....a totally acceptable replacement.

Edward

They stock the 1N4004's

PS...the package of 1N4148's I have were made in Germany for Radio Shack, btw.
