Any advise?

His high score is 58XXX and I made it to the high score list when we were playing doubles for all of 45 seconds, he knocked me out after his turn was over.

Fun game, as I can now get to about 30000 before I lose my first life, but always die when there are multiple dragons and bad guys coming in a row.
He can somehow blow up these guys up all in a row without getting killed, and he won't tell me how he does it.

We did the same thing with DK3, fun stuff, family style competition with daily bragging rights, I hope he remembers these times and tells his grandkids about it when I'm long gone.

Help me beat him.....

Kill as many as you can with a single rock drop. Big points. Work on some patterns that line them up under the rock.

Yeah my buddy kicks my butt on my machine, I think his HS was around 250k. The main trick as someone else said is to kill as many guys as you can with one rock. Dig a long tunnel and hold the rock until they are in line.

Decent score. I can usually do 180-220 per game. I need to get over to warlordag's place so i can replace mr. waffles high score! :D

This thread reminds me of Homer and Bart with that boxing game. Homer goes to the arcade and pays some kid to teach him how to play since he couldn't beat Bart. It's one of the few episodes I've actually watched. Pretty funny as I could relate.

Never seen that one
I don't work at a nuclear power plant however my brother in-law does.

I did not know that dropping the second rock triggers the fruit bonus..... that should help

You mean you can't pump up the multiple monsters at all?

If I remember this correctly, you do a couple pumps and then turn away then quickly turn back. That will disengage you from the first monster and when you turn back and pump again, it will start inflating whatever is closest to you. If there are 2 or 3, you can keep doing this to group them up for dropping a rock on them.

This gets really hard to do on later levels when they're moving fast.

This is a key tactic that you have to be able to do successfully to start getting the high scores. Some people also clear the whole screen of dirt. Again, gotta pump but not bust...

Last time I was at Flynn's, there were some really low scores on their Dig Dug. :D

Just remember the basics...

You get more points for horizontal kills. You get more points the deeper you kill the monsters. Also, more points for multiple kills with a rock.

Do those and you should easily be able to break 58k.

For every level after Level 15, the levels repeat themselves in multiples of 4. 16 is the same as 20,24 etc. After level 24, the Pookas and Fygars speed up again, so the patterns you used in Levels 16-24 won't necessarily work in levels 25 and up.

The world record for this is over 5 million and level 256 is a "kill screen", which means that you can't get past it, even if you had infinite lives. You start that level with a Pooka on top of you and you die instantly. You stop getting free men after 880,000.

My personal best is about 1.2 million (Round 69), but for whatever reason, I sort of stopped playing after that.

If you wanna see a really good Dig Dig player, watch this. You could even steal some of his patterns.

I think the kill screen was fixed in the Rev 2 boards, although the TG page says nothing about this and actually lists the DIP switch settings for both Revs as if the scores would be comparable.

I did that quite often when I had my Dig Dug. The best thing to do is as mentioned previously and dig long vertical tunnels underneath the rocks. You can stun multiple monsters to get them grouped as tightly as possible before dropping the rocks, resulting in more points. The best thing about Dig Dug is that you keep getting extra lives every 40k points after the frst 40k (first one is at 10k). My best score on Dig Dug was about 460k. It took forever to play a game (around 30 minutes). The first 12 levels were boring. When I got up to around 200k was when the game started to get hard. I really love the game but it just takes too long to play, which was why I sold it. Maybe when my kids are a little older, I will get one again.

I can't get above 195k (my max is 194k something), but all I can say is, once the enemies speed up, go for just pumping them and then getting rocks once they're thinned out. Those 8000+ point fruits are worth the time it takes and make up for not getting rock chains. Not worth the risk it takes to get them all in one at that point, you WILL die. Haha

Picked up my Dig Dug on Saturday and almost killed myself getting it into my basement. Normally I throw it on the dolly and take it down the stairs one at a time. Well, genius me didn't think about the fact that coming in from the snow would mean my shoes would be slippery. I got a few steps down and then my feet slipped out from under me. Luckily the game only dropped one more step then leaned forward. The ceiling going down the stairs is low so the top of the game dug into the ceiling and wedged it there so it didn't drop any further but for a moment my life flashed before my eyes as I realized I was about to be crushed by an Atari cab. The top corners have some wear on the t-moulding and there are two nice little indents into the ceiling where the cab hit. But I'm alive. I'm just glad I decided to strap the cab to the dolly which I normally don't do. My daughter was in the other room in the basement and all I heard was "um... dad, are you alive?"

That said, I got a few games in and it's going to take some practice as I haven't played Dig Dug for probably about a year.

The key to success is to drop 2 rocks and get the Veggies in the middle of the screen... they are worth much more than anything else...

Once you get a few levels in, yes, but until they're worth a lot you can get more by dropping the rocks on enemies... you get more for killing multiple, EX. smashing 2 with 2 separate rocks will net you 2000 but getting 2 with the same rock will get you 2500. Since the veggies start out at under 1000 points I find it's better score wise to focus on smashing the most with one and then, if there's a way, focusing on the veggie.

Well, since 2 rocks have to be dropped to get a veggie, I always try to kill as many as I can with those two rocks... then get the veggie... then kill the rest. Usually I'll go for a 3rd or 4th rock to kill the rest if possible as you always get more for killing with a rock than with a pump.
