Dig Dug cabaret arcade archeology restoration; DD side art!

Here's my Dig Dug cabaret I picked up this weekend. Its serial no #00472 and is located in IL 60073 for those keeping track. ;)

It starting out as a coverted DD to a "Exerion" conversion and it will eventually come back to its roots as a DD cabaret. There is some work to be done. I started off by taking the marquee and side art off. The marquee plexi is all gooey. I'm using g-gone to slowly take this stuff off. Its nice to see the marquee to give me a little hope.

The side art came off great on both sides, with some exceptions . The right side wood vinyl looks great. The left side came off great too, but the previous installer of conversion art had, uncaringly already pulled off a lot of the fake wood vinyl. I'm sad about that. I may have to develop some side art to pull the "rug" over the cabinets sides. ;) ... Has this already been started by anyone?

Things I'll need to gather up are glass bezel, CPO, PCB, volume test switch assembly, possibly a wiring harness, fix or replace the monitor, side art.... This month will need to be mostly elbow grease on this project because of my budget. I'm just happy to get this cab!

Does anyone have a hires scan of the cabaret bezel? There is a scan on MrDo.MameWorld.info, but it is only 500x500 pixel resolution. I know I can make it work using all the other DD vector art that is out there, but the more info the better things will turn out.

Has anyone had any custom bezels printed? Any suggestions on where to go?

Here's a JPEG off of my vector artwork as is. I still need to try matching the colors to my new CPO, but here is how this laid out. I think this looks pretty decent for what I had to work with. Does anyone have any suggestions on who can print this? Is there a reasonably priced place to print this on glass or plexi? Or is the sandwich method my best option?

Any critique on the art are welcome too.

I will vouch for the CPO's. They look damn nice.

One of these days I need to have you print up a bezel and a new marquee for me.

Anyone have any scans of the DD bezel? I'd love to be able to accurately trace the DD artwork for my cabinet restoration and the community. Even an upright bezel scan will help get this to being closer to 100%.... for the love of DD where's the humanity? :D

Small weekend update. The old CPO got stripped this weekend and I found a nice original CPO underneath the conversion. It was all gluey, but the extra button holes was the clincher for me. The CP was completely stripped and painted this weekend. The holes are partially patched and filled. I still have some sanding to do on the button patches before applying the new CPO.

What could this be...?

Crab nuggets! Its all gooey and has some pesky additional holes. #@?! conversion!.... anyone want to buy the Exerion PCB? Its highly collectable.

With the new born baby time has been scarce, but have stayed up late finalizing the artwork for the bezel and just completed my "fantasy" side art for this cabinet. I have come up empty handed on an original glass bezel. I think I have gathered enough information to allow me to release my vector art for the bezel, unless I can get a scan from someone else and adjust from there. I think this will do just fine.

Dig Dug cabaret side art; I truly don't think the side art for DD cabaret had ever been made, but since my cabinet has damaged vinyl I thought I'd take some cues from the damaged shape. I also like the DD poster art that WAS released from Atari. This was my basic template and inspiration for the side art.

The next phase is to have these printed and finish the restoration.

Here's some pictures. Comments and suggestions welcome.

Nobody really knows for sure if Dig Dug cabaret sideart was ever made, but this card was apparently sent out with the cabarets when they were new. I do like what you designed though. Looks damn good.

That's really cool. I never came across a picture of the free Dig Dug side art offer. I may tweak my art in trying to resemble that picture. Very cool.

Welcome to the Dig Dug cabaret club. We're all hoping the side art will be reproed soon.
IIRC it's on the list with other cabarets.

Mort,
Thanks! I can't wait to get her back to her old glory. Great game & cabinet design!

What's this IIRC list? I'm a noob. :)

Thanks!

And in response to the possibility of Dig Dug sideart being made from the original Atari films along with all the other Atari cabarets, Scott Evans (the owner and caretaker of the films) does not believe that he has or that there ever were films for Dig Dug.

And if there were, they would probably be the last to be reproduced purely due to the lack of numbers of Dig Dug cabaret cabs out there.

Mail the card!

I'd mail it in if I had the card. ;) ..."You're living a fantasy. There is no Easter Bunny. There is no Tooth Fairy. There is no Queen of England. This is the real world, and you need to wake up!"...LOL My kid watches Mega Mind too much. Great movie!

The one thing I do like about the DD art on the card vs. my "fantasy" poster side art is the row of flowers. But with design sometimes less is more. Their layout wouldn't be hard to do other than Fygar with the fire on it. I haven't seen a clean image file of Fygar w/ fire for me to vectorize.

I will have Rikitiki print out the bezel and one of the side art design sets. To help Rikitiki out, would anyone else be interested in my "fantasy" side art or a close to approximation of the DD "send in card" side art?

Here's a quick interpretation of the card DD cabaret side art... I'm not sure which I like better; fantasy art or interpretation art. I know Fygar is supposed to be on the left, but it looked imbalanced. I also know I did not put the vertical side bars and the bottom horizontal bar on it. I'd imagine with the bars they'd be color schemed like the glass bezel.

I'd say if you aren't doing the original faux art exactly anyway, to go with your design. It's much more aesthetically pleasing and the shape is cooler on the edges from the pop-out art.

Looking good. Do you still need a marquee?
I think I have a NOS one with paper still attached.

Oops, my bad. I thought he had the films for Dig Dug also.
That's my mail in card in the photo, I can tell by the smudge, lol
I bought my game from brother Pookdolie here on the forum who
took the picture while he still had it.
