This popped into my mind, share your maddenly difficult video gaming memories. Things you just couldn't ever seem to do properly, or if you did it was always by accident. It may be related to a design flaw in the game, or maybe you could never figure out the timing properly.

A recent memory is trying to do the jumping puzzles in Castlevania Lament of Innocence on PS2. It was a great looking game, cool music and battles, but one of the jumping puzzles early on was nearly impossible for me to do.

A classic memory (of course) is the almost inability to properly land on the aircraft carrier in Top Gun on the NES. You can probably remember this one too!

Back in the day I couldn't beat Tyson on Punch Out for nes and it drove me crazy! All my friends had beat it and I just couldn't get it done for the longest time. Did get it eventually though. lol

For me it's the motorcycle-ish area on Battletoads. I finally did it with an emulator though (only because of save states)

Im with you on this one.

My worst was the original Metal Gear. I dont think I could ever beat the first level.

I couldnt ever beat Jackal, that was one of my favorites.

Physics based games like Trials 2 have been the more frustrating of late for me. The hill at about 45s into the video below drives me up the wall...no pun intended...

Top Gun did suck...Never got past the 2nd level.

My gave I loved to hate was Mystery Quest on the NES. I could never get out of the first castle thingy....sucked.

How about this one? Trying to get out of the hole in E.T for atar 2600 without falling back in?

or

certain parts of blaster master for the nes.. I just remember that being insanely hard...maybe it was something to do with the switching back and forth between the tank and normal level mode.

ugh...

when I was a kid, beating goro on mk. LOL

I remember being able to beat him on Game Gear but not any other system.

Another good example (although it does make sense really) is Mutant League football with deaths turned on. It is possible to lose your two kick returners. If you have this misfortune (it happened to me once, also the last time I played it on console) there is an annoying "AI" feature involved. At the time of the kickoff, your players will go towards the opposing team's kicker, while the opposing team will go after the ball. End result, you can't ever field the kick unless it goes out of bounds.

I successfully got the AI team to roll the counter in that game... Suffice it to say, I lost. I'd doubt you'd win tho. ;)

I'll throw my hat into the ring with Beating "Amagon" without cheating

Also River Raid on the Atari 2600 was quite maddening at times; especially when the passages started getting very narrow.

Played that on my NES about a year ago and beat it pretty easily. The cycle ride on Battletoads is pretty easy too, getting past the snake level is much harder. One game on NES I found hard as a kid though was Legacy of the Wizard. I never even found one crown in that game. Another game I found pretty hard was Holy Diver for the famicom. It was weird, a local place that rented out NES carts had this game for rent, it was Holy Diver and it came with the converter. Only famicom game I ever played growing up, not counting the 31 in 1.

I have a lot of NES moments:

- Ninja Gaiden. Nuff said.

- Hunchbacks in Castlevania.

- Dam(n) level in TMNT.

- Ditto on Mike Tyson.

- Outside of the castle in Wizards & Warriors

I'm sure there's more, but I'm frustrated just by listing these. Haha.

This reminds me of the final boss in Turok 2, which I couldn't even beat WITH cheats! The reason is he auto-heals...

Another one is the timed level at the end of either Red Faction or Red Faction II (I can't remember) there is a level where you are in a rocket or a space craft of some sort. You need to get to the control room within a very limited amount of time. If you don't, you explode. I never got past that level.

I don't know why, but I just had to beat MTPO using the Advantage stick. Not for Turbo or anything like that, because you know that does next to nothing for the game, but I just felt like I should beat it with a joy stick. That was a pain for me.

How about the end boss of pretty much any DOOM game back in the day? I know there was a trick to it (like a certain spot to stand or something) but I never figured it out on my own and always had to use god mode in the end.

It wasn't until years later a friend tried to explain to me what to do without using cheats. I never did go back and try it though, and I've never looked at a FAQ or anything.

I just thought of another one...

Actually winning a race in Days of Thunder for the NES.

Impossible without a Game Genie code that gives you infinite fuel and No Damage to tires and engine, because the moment you make a single pitstop, you've lost. Even if it's just for a couple seconds you go from 1st to 12th.
