Differences between Space Duel and Quantum cabs?

This was supposed to be my first post but I had to chime in on two repair threads. :)

I've always been a big fan of Atari vector games and over 15 years of on and off collecting I've scored a Battlezone, restored a Space Duel and let an Omega Race cocktail languish for want of a good pcb (curse those #@%&$* nicads). I know - OR is Midway but it used a GO5 so its Atari vector in my book.

Anyways...

On one of my few warehouse raids, I scored a working Quantum pcb and marquee. From the few pics I've seen of Quantum and the time I saw one at a fellow collectors home in Denver back in 1998, the cab is very similar if not exactly the same as SD. Can anyone verify how close the two are?

Luckily the same warehouse raid also netted a complete but non-working Amplifone with a supposedly good red HV transformer.

The control panel on the Space Duel comes up higher on the Bezel than the Quantum CP does...

The cabs are essentially the same other then the fact that the Space Duel's have 2 speakers below the control panel (as opposed to 1 on Quantum) and the control panel also rolls up a little higher towards the monitor.

EDIT: Mod beat me to it....

Thanks for the numerous replies.

I didn't notice the difference in # of speakers and that leads to another Q - I can't tell what Quantum used for speaker grilles. Was it a piece of perforated metal like underneath the marquee on Tempest or a 6x9 car stereo grille?

MrBill2084 - is that CP something you had made locally or was it a net purchase?

Just found this at http://www.rotheblog.com/2008/03/arcade/classic-games/atari-quantum-reproduction-artwork/

You will find information on the internet saying that Quantum had the same Atari cabinet as Space Duel and Gravitar, but this is actually not true. Although the cabinet 'looks' the same as Gravitar/BW and Space Duel, it's actually not, in spite of what's erroneously reported on various websites.

The Quantum cabinet was modified to allow for the extra bend in the control panel (See photo below). That extra bend was needed to allow space for the trackball, which needs more room than allowed in the Gravitar/BW and Space Duel control panels. (Gravitar/BW and Space Duel all use a button arrangement, which takes up very little interior space).
Quantum Gravitar Control Panel Comparison

Also, the smoked monitor glass is longer in Quantum than those found in Gravitar/BW and Space Duel, because Quantum uses a vertically orientated monitor (Gravitar/BW and Space Duel all use a horizontally orientated montitor, and thus the monitor glass used on those cabs is smaller).

So I guess I either need precise measurements or I need somebody with a Quantum cab to trace the cabinet profile with a piece of drafting size paper.

Please keep us updated on your progress along with any advice. There are more than a few of us out there wanting to do the same thing with a space duel or gravitar donor cabinet.

The control panel is a reproduction(probably from hans o). I had a spare quantum cabinet and I passed it along to karl.. Just need to get him some of the other parts (CP, marquee and possibly pcb) .

there are a few converted quantum cabinets floating around. So if you have the board, I would think you can find cabinet if you look. JUstr piecing one togther will be expensive..
