Differences between Hard Drivin' cockpit and compact

Hi all,

Hard Drivin' has to be one of my all time favourites but until the wife will allow me to have one I'm just going to have to make do with playing it on my MAME cabinet (yeah, I know).

While in the middle of building a dedicated driving control panel to play it on, I've noticed differences in the calibration of the controls between the cockpit and compact versions - the cockpit version seems to calibrate the steering like a normal analog wheel (turn it all the way left then all the way right), but the compact tells you to turn it clockwise 4 turns - this implies optical steering to me - but were they any different?

B.

I dont know much about the calibration, but as for the feel of the game, I've always liked the cockpit version a lot better than the upright. I dont know if the steering is the same or not, but to me it just felt much better on the cockpit.

I know the cockpit uses a medium res monitor and the upright uses a standard res. I also know they are both heavy bastards but the cockpit takes the cake...

I have a Race Drivin Upright and it used the turn 4 times steering force feed back. Thats what i would use.

Thanks for the replies guys!

I was going to go with the compact romset since as you say it is in standard res, but I wasn't sure whether the apparent difference in steering should influence the steering mech I will fit (270 degree or optical) - I suppose I'll just have to try it and see!

Either way I'll have to make do without that wrist breaking force feedback! :)

I think someone told me on the cockpit model the force feedback strength depended on how far the seat was back. If the seat was all the way forward, most likely a child was playing so the feedback wasn't as strong. If the seat was all the way back, then a larger person was playing and the feedback was stronger.

I don't have the machine so I don't know for sure. Can anyone with a cockpit verify this?
