I am almost done with my centipede restore so I am moving on to the next game, R-type. When I got this I had assumed it was painted but the more I look at it I think the original color was gray. Did Nintendo make any r-types this color?

It is certainly possible, it was the same cabinet, but usually the R-types were black. Even so I have seen a few R-Types in the gray cabinets over the years. Most of the gray cabinets were made for dedicated versus machines, but that's not to say that Nintendo didn't stick R-Types in a few of them. Either way the gray is legit for Nintendo anyway.

Hmm. Odd. That's the first gray one I've ever seen. I've seen plenty of black cabs. That's definitely the shape. My guess -- it was black originally, but painted gray for some reason.

Okay well, there ya go.

Well any opinions on whether I should restore it gray or black?

Up to you, but personally, I think it looks awesome in black.

Black all the way. I think that gray absolutely sucks. Best way to go is to restore the cabinet, give it a nice even coat of primer and paint and cover it in black pica vinyl from HAPP.

The cabinet is garbage. New cabinet all the way. Ill use black melamine.

That works too. To stay legit, make sure to use that crappy OSB for the top, bottom, back panels and back door.

Like I said, I did restore/ convert one of those crappy grey cabinets to the black version before and it looked 1000x better when I was done:

Looks good. is that the Pica vinyl on the sides? Ive never used it. Is it smooth enough to put side art over?

That is is. I've used it on several restorations, including this TRON:

-and the side art sticks just fine. If I ever had any trouble during or immediately after the side art installation, I just used a hairdryer and a blue decal squeegie wrapped in a soft cloth to burnish it back down.

Im going to have to try that. Do you just paint on the inside of the sides and around the coin door or do you use it there also?

I generally paint the inside edges, though I did use the pica on the inside of this Ladybug cab, as that's how they did it at the factory:
