Did Galaga Originaly have smoked plexi under the glass?

I recently purchased a good condition Galaga. The monitor just died and I am replacing with a billlabs from arcadeshop.com. My Galaga is complete except that it is missing the black plastic bezel that blocks out the light from behind the cabinet. I am planning on ordering a replacement with the monitor, but I also see that they are selling a smoked plexi too. Did Galaga originally come with smoked plexi/glass too? Some of my other games have it, but I didn't think Galaga did. I just want to restore to the way it was originally.

Fair question, and the answer is maybe. Some did, and some didn't IIRC. I think the early ones didn't have them and later on they did have them, but I don't recall for sure. It is good to have if your game room has a lot of light. It helps to keep the monitor from looking weak and washed out.

I've seen quite a few of them and they all had tinted plexi over the monitor.

I can confirm that they DID come stock with them... some locations removed the dark plexi, especially in very "light" conditions. The original Midway part had the part number in the bottom left corner.

I can confirm the minis did, so I wouldn't understand why the uprights would not (most I have seen have them).

Agreed, you would want one if you have a Galaga. I have to say it is less necessary on a new monitor as back is much more black then on the ones from the 80's. Still it looks better with it than without.
