Man, BITD, if you were a coin collector, and you were responsible for dumping all of these coin buckets, I can only imagine what people came across in the machines.

Anyone have any good stories from this angle to share? I've been collecting coins since I was a kid. It's one of those hobbies that was shown to me as a kid and stuck.

Umm... I worked for an operator for a while, and I think you're missing the fact that the only thing the mechs will accept is quarters. So.... unless you were a quarter collector (I kept all the silver ones) there wasn't really much to look for, lol.

some vending machines take 5, 10 and 25 cents. I only take out the silver and put back regular coins in their place.

Not from this line of work, but I picked a few 2$ bills and old nickels (1907?) and interesting coins from working register at Chick-Fil-A. Always kept cash on hand in case something interesting ended up in my till, would just flip my "current" change for the "vintage" whatever...

First time I got a silver quarter, I really thought it was play money due to the huge weight difference.

Not from arcades, but a friend became a coin collector just handling so much change as a pizza delivery driver. He has a whole roll of bicentennial quarters (not that those are super special, but it's funny to see). He has one silver quarter, and he said the only reason he found it was because it dropped on the floor and made a different sound than regular quarters.

Yes, this I know- but the quarter we know spans back to 1932, and they were made at 3 diff mints at the time. See how much more you have learned already?

Maybe we just have cheap counters that don't kick out the silver ones, but there's no way I would have the time to pick through the quarters when we check a location out. We just dump the buckets into the counter, then fill rolls.

Wow.. I also wanted to mention that my juke was designed to accept half dollars so op's would have had those to collect as well BITD!

Found a 1951-D quarter in change this past week.

I thought "Cool, I bet it's worth a buck". It's actually worth $7. Reminds me how long I've been out of the loop re: coin collecting...
