how much would a diamondplate playfield increase the price of a game, on average?

Depends on the game. Can you be more specific?

Always - condition is king. Plenty of non-DP playfields in superb condition, plenty of DP playfields that are wrecked. Come take a look at my project T2 sometime.

That has a DP playfield and it looks like someone drove a tractor over it.

sorry - you're absolutely right that i should have given more info!

i'm looking at buying a TAF. playfield is in very good shape, with very little wear in general, and is diamondplate. so i was wondering how this would modify the price.

actually, i'll use this thread to ask the general question of purchase. playfield is in good shape - i'd give it 8/10. one broken plastic (right slingshot), one broken pop bumper cover, otherwise in good shape. rubbers need replacing - so what. cabinet is probably 8/10 or so - little wear at all in any place. electronics are in good shape, both in backbox and under p/f. no battery leakage, etc. few lights out, but no big deal. thing works. as far as i could tell from testing today all the other features work, though i'm not a TAF expert so didn't know exactly what to test.

one problem is that the DMD is not working. at all. but it's a brand new DMD (we pulled it out, and he had the receipt and the old DMD, so i believe him). he said he hooked it up just a couple of weeks ago, and my suspicion is that he just messed up when connecting it up. but, there is a possibility that something is wonky with the DMD driver.

he's asking $2500.

i already gave him a tentative yes. but could back out if necessary.

All TAF (Addams Family) pins had a Diamond Plate playfield in them. The later ones made (Addams Family Special Collectors Edition, IE Gold) was not stamped DP but they are Diamond Plated. Bally/Williams stopped using the DP logos and all playfields made after 1992 were Diamond Plated.

The rare Diamond Plate games are:

Dr Dude (most were not DP) only a handful was made DP. I was told 12 were DP'ed.
FH (a few hundred were DP of the orig run). The later factory backup inventory were DP.
BR - Some were DP and some had the other clear coated coating on them called XR7.
BOP (Bride of Pinbot), most of the games were non-DP but some did have a DP in them.
Whirlwind - Rare to find a DP playfield in them but Williams did make a few of them.
Riverboat Gambler - Only the proto and sample games had DP in them.

.

since it has a new dmd and isnt working at all, then that tells me there is a problem with the dmd controller's high voltage section

its pretty easy to rebuild and the kit is 5 or 6 dollars(great plains electronics)

The DMD problem could be as simple as having the ribbon cable installed incorrectly. I know on my DE games if it is installed backwards, you get nothing on the display other than maybe a blip of a few pixels when turned on.

If the machine is cosmetically good and otherwise working, $2500 sounds like a good price.

DP "rarity" is to a point it doesn't matter because of the reproduction play fields being made.
I had a "rare" DP'd Whirlwind and it only increased the resale value by a couple hundred bucks. It took quite a while for me to unload it for a lousy $1200.00.

honestly I think the only person an original play field will matter to is a die hard anal collector. Obviously everyone would prefer a clear coated table over a non but the whole "rarity" factor to me is a moot point.

thanks for all the comments, folks.

i went ahead and pulled the trigger. i'll be going to pick it up tonight. pics later :).

Oddly, I've seen a half dozen of these for sale and every one of them has been diamondplate. Was it really only the proto and sample games? I've never played the game but all I've seen have been remarkably cheap. Even a truly near mint DP version.

Deadly, that's remarkable that you had trouble getting $1200 for a DP Whirlwind. Really bad area to sell pins possibly?

Also to the OP. $2500 is pretty good for an Addams even with a bad DMD. If it's really in 8/10 condition. Obviously, condition is highly subjective. If the playfield has no wear then it should be pretty easy to sell for what you have in it.
