I'm getting some moving diagonal lines on the monitor I have in the Neo Geo I picked up... they appear to be (from my novice eye) "interference" type lines. They're only noticeable with light colored screens... etc...

Any place to start or should I just go right to a cap kit?

I am not as expert as a lot of guys on here but when i buy a new game the 1st thing i always do is recap the monitor, unless i can tell that it's just been done. It's so cheap to do and you don't have to worry about it for another 15 years LOL

Let's see some pic's of your new pickup,

Yeah...I know... I know... I was just hoping someone would say "YEAH! All you need to do is get one of those magnet things for around the wire" or some other magic solution.

:)

I have a K7000 cap kit in my stash... but it doesn't say 19" or 25"... it doesn't matter does it?

Also, this is the version that has the 2 anode wires... is that the ZENITH version? Is the cap kit the same? I seem to recall that it was.

Are the blacks on the screen actually black, or are they greyish/light? The Neo Geo boot screen should have a black background. If the SCREEN control is turned up too far, you'll get retrace lines - adjust it for a good black.

If it's actually interference, check the ground at the video harness, and the solder joints at the video header. I had some issues once with a poor ground connection causing weird lines in the picture.

Yeah, the blacks are black. I've adjusted the brightness and contrast up and down the and the lines remain. They aren't constant... sometimes they flow from the top left to the bottom right...sometimes they stop... sometimes they flow upwards from the bottom right to the top left. The lines though, are always diagonal from the bottom left to the top right...

OK, yeah, sounds like interference lines then. Check grounds, ensure that the video cable isn't pinched or damaged. Try disconnecting the power to the EL panel marquee, and see if it goes away.

Ah. Well, try unplugging that then :D

Hehe... it's actually turned off with no bulb. I tried a new bulb and it just burned at the edges so I figured the electronic ballast in it is going bad so I pulled the bulb and turned the fixture off. I'll be replacing it tonight likely.

It's funny. I have had this happen twice, did a forum search, posted in someone's thread asking the same question, was told to either add or remove a ground wire. I removed the ground wire from both monitors that I was having this same issue on. Worked like a champ for my Moon Patrol, didn't do shit for my Q*bert. Both were 4900's.

Are there any cons to removing the ground wire?

was just telling Aval0n about how all my Midway fighters with isos have the interference if you connect the earth ground to them.

I never once tried unplugging the marquee lights on any of them though. guess I won't be able to until I move them someplace else.

Yup sometimes you have to remove the ground... On Qbert (phetishboy was mentioning) there's a ground that connects to the back door that causes problems. If you disconnect the ground at the hinge the interference goes away.

I solved the problem with a jumper wire from FND to GND on the power supply. I prefer this method so I don't have to cut anything. Screen looks super nice now.
