I bought a DD a few weeks ago that I was told working last time it was on. Everything seems to work except the sound. I'm only getting one sound effect when hitting targets and the attract sound works most of the time. I have the dips set for background sound on. No background sound or speech.

I tested my sound board in my Qbert and it works which I believe means the only thing that can be wrong with the sound board is the roms. Pinball resource sells the roms and they are $26 each. I ran the self test and it seems to pass but I'm not sure I understand the manual instructions. I grounded out the sound lines on the connector and I'm getting nothing.

Those roms are expensive so I'd like to know how likely it's the roms and if I should be checking somewhere else before I order them.

Thanks.

I would check the driver PCB...I had a similar issue, and it turned out to be a 7404 on the driver board. I think it is Z13. It could also be a a problem on the CPU PCB, but I would start with 7404 on the driver PCB. Sound problems are a pain in the ass on System 80's.
It could be something on the CPU, Driver, Soundboard, or the connections between them all :(

Thanks, I'll see if I can find another Driver board to test before I order roms.

I know if you also don't have proper voltage coming of your power supply; it can do weird things with the sound....

I tested the 7404 and it was bad. Replaced it and now sounds are working!

Still no speech. Didn't get any speech in test mode 17. I get the "Ah" sound when I press the test button on the speech board and it passes the test. For fun I put in the sound board in my Qbert and I get all the Devil's Dare sounds but no Speech. I put the two Qbert roms in Devil's dare and it worked perfectly in Qbert. Any ideas? Thanks again.

Still no speech.

Is this game a reimport? DD's that were shipped to Europe only had sound, but no speech. Is there an auxiliary sound/speech power board in the backbox? If not, then this is an export game.

Yes, I have that Sound/speech power supply board. My friend I bought it from said there was speech last time he had it on. How does the speech work, does it come from the sound lines? I'm getting speech in Qbert using DD speech chip.
