Devastators conversion to 60 in 1, wiring hiccups

Hi all,
I original bought a Dig Dug cocktail with the intention of making it a 60 in 1 but after seeing the lackluster 60 in 1 menu and some correspondence with a local shop saying it would be hard to convert it in a way that would make going back to stock feasible I started looking for another cabinet. So, I picked up a Devastators for 50 bucks with a wacky screen that I easily fixed by adjusting it (except the slight burn in that says GAME OVER but I find it almost charming). The cabinet likely was converted from a Contra and I know of 0 [There is 1! -Ed.] loyal Devastators fans so I thought it'd make a good candidate for the classics.

Here's my issues:

It looks like the sound was hard wired to the Devastators PCB (wires were seemingly soldiered to the board and were attached to the speakers with wire nuts). So I'm going to need to put those into the harness since I currently have no sound. I'm having trouble finding the info on how/where to do that on the net. Was this standard for these cabinets or did someone hack it that way?

The other issue I have is the player 2 joystick is not registering so I cannot play 2 player simultaneous games. This is not a big issue for me though since I got a nice 4 way stick I just installed on player 1 and all the 2 player games are 8 way, I think. I would rather make the player 2 stick the lone 4 way stick (better position for maze games which I play with my right hand) and make the two sets of buttons clones or lefty/righty players, which I also don't know how to do. Perhaps I'll install a trackball and re-activate those games when I get comfortable enough with these things.

Any help, input or suggestions would be appreciated. Also, if you're in the Detroit area and are interested in a Devastator PCB let me know.

The speaker wires are a hack! In the JAMMA wiring L and 10 are for the speaker (see attached pic). I would guess that they are missing from your JAMMA harness. You can reinstall them if you have some split pins (the crimp connectors that are inside the JAMMA edge connector)

As for player 2 controls, I would suspect another JAMMA harness hack. Make sure that all the wires are connected correctly per the diagram. BUT you might also have a loose ground connection for all your player 2 controls; that would make them not work.

Is this the cab you have??

If so I have the same cab. As to the right side stick. Each stick has a harness hanging down with a break point in it. Disconnect at the break points and you can remove the entire CP. Make sure the one for the right side is solid. If the entire right stick is not working it may be a broken ground in the connector or somewhere ahead of the stick. Does the P2 button work? I want to say the P1 button goes through the harness for the left stick, the P2 through the right. I did sort of what you are thinking about. I actually pulled the entire P1 stick, put a temp plug in the hole, and switched its harness over to the P2 (right) stick. This was a year or so ago so I don't recall the specifics but I want to say I have some temp jumper wires in there to correct for the P1 and P2 buttons. May have flopped their connectors as well. I use it for an arcade shop board, a generic x-in-one, a SkyShark, a Time Pilot, and, well, anything I want in a Vert cab or need to test. If you do have this same cab I want to say the -5 is not populated. It may matter depending on what you stick in there. A 60 in 1 does not need it. What you will need to do is add a switch. Mine already had a service (perhaps it was test) switch wired to a button on top of the coin box. Can not recall which was there. Regardless, I added the missing one...test or service.

Well, it seems that I discovered the root of the P2 problem. My service menu settings did not save (I found this out when I had a single life upon start of Jr. Pac Man, one of my favorites). I fear it's because I don't have an "S3" wired but the service menu confirms that player 2 is live but the changes aren't saving.

I'll have to look for the split pins. I didn't look for that upon my initial look-see. Electronics and wiring are new to me, my background is more in building PCs but I'm definitely willing to learn. This is my first house and I'm single so now is the time to load up the basement with projects.

TTA,
I do have that cab, only in black and without the lower art (on both sides), plain jane black bezel, there's a slight rip in the marquee but it's in decent shape and the 3Dish helicopter on the right is sound. Overall, it's pretty sad looking cabinet. I knew P2 was sound (at least with Devastators) but was unsure if the wiring was different from game to game. The board recognizes it, I just have to figure out how to save my settings. I don't recall seeing a service button/switch. I will go back in the garage after it stops raining and poke around. I don't recall seeing one, however.

PheonixStar, I was mistaken. I've since edited my previous statement. Now, if only Bon Jovi would respond to my letter about the Million Faces and Rocked Them All line.

S3 doesn't matter unless you need to back up in your menu.

You save by pushing Player 1 Start or Player 2 Start. You must do so before you pass the Volume adjust screen. It will not save on the Switch Test screen.

Also, if you wire either of the Start buttons to the Test or Service wires, they will not Save, although they will work in normal gameplay mode.

When you push the Player 1 Start button to Save, you will see on the screen 'SETUP' quickly followed by 'SETUP OK'. Once you see the 'SETUP OK' screen, your settings have been saved and you can power off - wait about 5 seconds - then power back on (with dip switch #4 off) to boot it up normally with the new settings...

It's ok there Enduro. I on the otherhand am still waiting for Betty White to thank me for being a friend.

Never thanked you for the info. Apologies, modessitt. I did get it working although I had to save after I turned off the 8 way games and some lesser games I didn't care for and again after doing all the dips. Some of them come defaulted to a very "nerf"ed setting.

Now, I'm still dealing with the audio. The way I got the cabinet the speaker wires were hard wired off the board to some nuts to the speakers. Now I have to figure out where to put the speakers into the jamma harness. I'm willing to learn, buy some parts and get a little dirty but I need a shove in the right direction.
