I don't know the type of solder these things usually use, so what's the ideal temperature to desolder components on these?

I had the temperature set at ~375F which I understand to be the melting point for 60/40, but that didn't seem to budge the solder already on the chassis. I don't want to fry anything.

This is my first time using a temp controlled soldering station. Normally I use Radio Shack cheap-o 30watt jobbers.

For reals? I was scared at 500F.
If it works, it works.

Do you run it the same for soldering and desoldering?

Yes, but I have two different tools. I have a Hakko 808 that I desolder with, and I set it to the temp range that was closest to 700F. I use a Hakko soldering iron that I set to 700F whenever I use it. I can't tell you how many times I have been having trouble soldering something only to find the iron was turned down to 450 - 500F.

a higher temp is better as you won't have to leave the soldering iron on the thing being soldered for as long.

i swear at my rat shack 30 watt'er repeatedly, i need to just buy a good one :p you have to leave the rat shack on whatever your soldering for a good amount longer than a high quality unit.
