I've got a friend that just found a 19" Dell CRT in a closet that he forgot about. He was going to throw it out, but I said that I would take it.

Would the tube in it be a good candidate for a tube swap or would it be just better to use it in a MAME box?

Believe it or not, 19" computer tubes are a different size than a 19" arcade tube - they're smaller. Due to regulations, television sets must be sold as measured in VISIBLE diagonal inches. Computer monitors never fell under such rules, so a 19" computer monitor is closer to 17" visible, the glass envelope of the tube is 19". Arcade machine monitors use television tubes.

The practical upshot of this is that a 19" computer tube won't bolt into a 19" arcade monitor frame. Now, electrically, I've never tried putting an arcade monitor onto a computer tube - the computer tubes have a much finer dot pitch, but I do know that at least some of them have the proper neck pinout. I've always meant to try it, but have never gotten around to it.

Thanks Ian,

Sounds like I may be MAMEing one of the POS cabinets I have sitting in storage....
