Delivery Truck Just Arrived from Colorado!

You know what I'd consider doing in your shoes is printing it out with just regular inks, and then just going over some areas with these guys:

Something like Asteroids Deluxe is way too complex to color the fluorescent ink by hand and have it look anything close to the original, but the backdrop for SQ is way simpler. Color some areas with a green pen, others with orange/red, and you're good to go. It may or may not work but it would be worth a shot and I doubt it would cost a ton to find out.

It's not my first or second choice but it may be the most realistic alternative. I just worry it would wind up looking cartoonish. Also, there are a ton of dots to color on that graphic!

I was going to PM you about that very thread. I would love to learn if your friend had any luck.

Don't know if you ever saw the thread where Phoenix Arcade was looking at doing a repro of the Asteroids Deluxe backdrop. In the end it was cost prohibitive. This piece is much smaller which should make it easier, but it uses the same fluorescent inks which I guess makes it a real printing challenge.

I'm willing to invest something in getting it done. I'm sure someone could sell a couple dozen of these, enough to make a short run worth the effort. There are about 30 owners on VAPS.

The game is really great. Asteroids and Star Castle were always my favorites as a kid and this feels like an evolution of those with elements of Space War and Robotron thrown in. I love the feel and the sound is great. Really a fan of Cinematronics overall. They (and Vectorbeam) made some great stuff.
I'll keep you in the loop with whatever I find out. I'd like to get my original back sometime soon, but I know this type of work takes a while; so it's sorta a "when it happens it happens" type of thing. If anything, I'm fine making you a "blank" or two, copying the piece using the same card-stock material. Then, you could do whatever you felt was best to get it copied. That's all assuming the printing doesn't work out.

I actually sent my Asteroids Deluxe inner bezels to Darin, so am familiar with that whole run, lol. I really appreciate him looking into it, it just sucks it didn't work out. We chatted a bit at about it at the Christmas lunch and I forget the pricing he told me; but it was CRAZY high and no one would buy them at the price they'd need to be. The Solar Quest backdrop is a LOT more simple, so maybe I could chat with him about doing a repro; again, assuming the copying my friend is doing doesn't work out.

Again, I'll keep you posted about anything I find out; and if anything don't mind doing some blanks for you.

I also 100% agree on the feel/sound/gameplay of Solar Quest. It'd be really hard to ever part with this thing. Overall, I think Cinematronics/Vectorbeam are my favorite manufacturer of vectors; it just SUCKS that they're so hard to work on. Or, at least different from the other games. I really wish people had a greater opportunity to play the un-common to rarer games. Space War, Solar Quest, Starhawk and Tailgunner are all awesome and have some of the best audio of the vectors. It's one reason I love collecting them, so others can play some games they might not be able to otherwise. That, and I apparently have a "thing" for vectors, lol.

Yeah, let me know. It's a bummer not having it in the game. It would be great if Darin could look into it. Obviously not as many customers as AD but it's less than half the size and doesn't have any die-cut pieces that have to stand up off the background.

I'm 100% with you on the vectors. I've been wondering if I could piece together a Warrior and/or a War of the Worlds. I'd really like to talk to the guy who is building the 4-joystick cabinet. That would be an amazing game.

cool score

personally for the backdrop i would copy animesuperj's profile out of some black card stock/cardboard, get some blacklight reactive paint in the appropriate colors, and roughly approximate the splatter pattern with a paint brush pulling on the bristles and releasing to create the pattern... with a little practice i think you could get the density close enough that for minimal cost you could forget about it, and enjoy the effect, until you stumble on an original (or someone does the repro run)
