OK, I'm gonna try degaussing my new 27" tri-res monitor.

I'm gonna try the old Radio Shack bulk eraser that some folks said should work. I don't want to screw with the nearby other games so what precautions if any should I take to not hose them up with the giant electro-magnet?

How far away from the monitor do they have to be to not hose them?

Thanks!

I thought the new stuff did that automatically when you turned them on?

They do a pretty light degaussing to try and prevent the problem. It can still get pretty messed up. Don't know what to say about the bulk eraser. My degaussing coil says to just work in slow circles moving toward the monitor from something like 10 feet away. Then you repeat the action as you back away from it. I do a modified version of that. As long as you moving it around, you shouldn't cause problems for other games.

10' away! Holy crap!

My other games I just moved to about 5' away to avoid hosing them with the attempt.

5' away isn't safe? I can't imagine that a screen is going to be affected if it's more than a couple of feet away -- the field strength of the magnet should fall off rapidly with distance.

Does it matter if the game is on when you degauss it?

i've always done it with the game on. the coil i got is one of the ones you can get off ebay and i'm sure everywhere else, about a 10" diameter coil. i usually start about 2' or so away and work toward the monitor. usually doesn't do much any farther away.

OK, so I just ended my first degaussing session.

I used the bulk eraser -- damn that thing is strong!

It was definitely affecting the picture as far away as 5'.

I made things better but there's still some discoloration in the bottom left part of the screen. I'd say about 2/3rds of the problem has been resolved. It's blatantly obvious in the monitor test color purity screens and a little bit noticeable in the game. Someone who wasn't a video game fan probably wouldn't notice but if you look for it it's pretty easy to see.

The discoloration was stubborn -- I could get it to change mostly to the right color but never all the way.

just don't use the .45!

only if you're done with the monitor. i had a seriously fucked screen burned to hell disco monitor that i took shooting. used a 300gr. JHP out of a super blackhawk, 44 mag. entry hole was pretty small but blew the whole back of the tube off. it was fun. we put some holes in the chassis after that.

You missed the part where I said you start at the 10' distance and move toward the game. Attached are the instructions from my coil to help clear things up.

Edit: Of course it says 7'. I have a great memory, but it is short!

I can't get the other games 10' away within reason.

My tube tv is about 9 feet behind the game -- I can't get that far back unless I literally rearrange the entire room.

5' was about the best that I could do w/o getting too close to the tv.

Having said that, I did not spend 2 full minutes moving it from one side of the screen to another before "circling" away.

Does it really take 2 full minutes?

I do seem to have a really stubborn spot that won't go completely away.

Stubborn spots are caused by something like the monitor frame, CP, or other metal object being magnetized. They take longer to degauss and if they are magnetized, they will screw with your monitor and make it look like the monitor is not degaussed properly when it actually is. That is my experience anyway... Do the two minutes. If that doesn't do it, do another two minutes. I had to do one game all over the top half for several minutes to get a problem out of what I think was the monitor frame. Plus, your really supposed to face the tube to magnetic north if I remember correctly.

Tsk Tsk Tsk.

Look, to degauss it, just put the degausser up against the center of the tube, turn it on and start making small circles as you slowly back away, making bigger and bigger circles as you back up. When you're about 3-4 feet away, your circles should be about arm length in radius, then turn it off. The monitor should look fine. If not, try again, or check to make sure there isn't any unshielded magnetic source nearby (like another game's speaker).

Doesn't your new monitor have a degauss function in the onscreen menu? Just trigger that a few times....

I'm afraid it proved resistant to the Mod technique as well.

SOB just won't go away.

Nothing else there next to it. Closest game is 5' away.

ok, when I did that the spot got a little bit worse and a few minor spots appeared in other corners that weren't there before.

When I moved it back the other spots disappeared and the spot in the LL corner is back to what it was before.

No, should I try to degauss it while it's turned?

I just turned it off; waited a minute, turned it, powered it on and saw the results, powered it off, turned it back the way that it was.
