I have a Defender that was working fine for a few days and now the colours are wrong. The background is always purple, the Landers and Mutants are mainly black, the ship is flashing between blue and yellow as is the top part of the screen. The defender logo is always yellow but the red part changes to a random colour everytime it is displayed.

Any ideas?

The test menus are hard to navigate as the text seems to be black on a black background. However using the LEDs I can go to the RAM test which shows the rug test in shades of red and black and that seems to pass (according to the LEDs), Cycling to the Color RAM test shows the patterns it should 3 red screens, 3 green screens and 2 blue (going from Dark to Light) and after this the LEDs show the correct patterns.

Any other ideas? I replaced the Video decoder PROMs and that didn't do anything.

There is one problem right there... the text should be white...

During the color RAM test, the display should cycle through 8 colors, 2 seconds each. Do you have a copy of this ?: Defender Setup Booklet

If you are seeing any red green or blue your monitor is probably not the issue... I suspect it still is the color RAM. It could be a loose connection to the monitor but unlikely since you have all 3 colors but have a lack of white (which is all the colors combined)... so it seems like a data issue to me.

I know the text should be in colour as I have gone through the set up before, however all the text is not shown, but the test mode is working as all the tests do work (according to what the LEDs are showing and what is happening on the screen).

As stated the colour RAM test is showing the 8 colours for 2 seconds each when it gets to that test and it is showing the right colours (3 Reds, 3 Greens and 2 Blues) with no bands of colour like the manual says a colour RAM failure would be.

Because of this I know the monitor isn't at fault, and all three colours are shown within the game.

In game, the background is always purple, the aliens are mainly black, the ship is flashing between yellow and blue as is the border around the scanner and scores.

The odd thing is the Defender logo which always has the text in Yellow but the shadow border (which should be red) is always a different colour, I have seen cyan, black, orange, white and yellow.

The game itself works perfectly, with the high score text being white and the high scored being saved fine.
