Ok,
The game boots up and goes directly to bookeeping screen.
here's what i've done.
1.brand new battery connector installed- with brand new AA batteries.
2.the caps or diodes that come directly off of the batteries have been replaced
3.new 5101 socket and chip replaced
4. NO FRICKING LUCK !!!
would appreciate any suggestions, besides break the mpu over my knee,,,which might be in my near future.

Mine was doing the same and i put in a rebuilt Power Supply from Dokert. With his Power supplies you can adjust the volts! Now mine works great.

i appreciate the post. thank you. i actually have rebuilt this power supply with a kit from bob roberts.
i JUST got finished checking pin 22 on the 5101 chip and I am getting 4.0 vdc. this is good .,,,,but somewhere there is a problem.

Check the voltage with the power off. Also make sure the diodes are going the right directions. If not you will be trying to power the board off the batteries.

Try going through the diagnostics and run the CMOS RAM test.

I fixed the problem.....

I want to thank you for the input today. i appreciate the quick response. :)
I pulled the board out of the game today to give it one more look over.

I corrected/fiddled with a few things to the board before putting it back in the game and NOW IT WORKS PERFECTLY !!

First, i had ordered two 5101 chips from bob roberts. I had installed one of them in the board in an earlier attempt along with a new socket- no luck

well, this last look at the board I think I put the other 5101 chip that I had ordered from bob into the game. I dont think this was it though. but maybe.

Secondly i noticed the two resistors that are directly below the batteries had some corrosion around- not much , but enough to make me want to measure the ohms. One of these resistors broke/fell apart while testing.
I replaced it with another of the same type.

Lastly, I noticed these tiny parallel running traces that were just above these resistors. just for giggles i did a continutity check. one seemed to not give a reading. i tried to solder a wire to jump this particular trace, but couldn't get the solder to stick to wire, but did melt a tiny bit of solder on the trace.
I then had continuity from the solder (im guessing).
SUMMARY
three things were done and the game worked !
1. tried a new(er)/different 5101 chip
2. replaced a resistor
3. cleaned and possibly repaired broken trace by flowing new solder on trace.
Im not sure which "one" of these last three things that I did, but maybe all of them helped to get this working.

Congrats!

It may have been a combination of all three. Or it may have been the other CMOS chip. I recently bought 10 from a reputable electronics house. They were shipped in black antistatic foam and 3 of the 10 failed the CMOS test. So just because it is new doesn't guarantee performance.
