Ok, it was started over here:

http://forums.arcade-museum.com/showthread.php?t=172683

But this is a more appropriate place for the repair of the game.

History so far:

  • Jawn picked up a Defender for $50 that "Worked before I moved it".
  • He brought the game over here, game gets bad rug, 4 solid lights and hangs at the end of the rug pattern.
  • Move the Ribbon cable, game boots to a better rug then reports a RAM error.
  • Replace 9 RAMS, game boots into Book Keeping.
  • Game won't leave book keeping, so I replace the 5101 and the 4071. Same results.
  • I can advance backwards to Function 28, then forward. The book keeping screen flashes a couple times then goes back to Function 1.
  • I did the Lithium Battery mod (Sorry Jawn), and that didn't help either.
  • Replaced the 4 big caps on the board (one looked bad), no change.
  • Watched the RESET line on the CPU and cycled through the book keeping. The CPU was NOT reset when it went back to the book keeping menu.
  • Tried two different ROM boards and I get the same results.

Any ideas on what to look at next?

It's probably just a fuse. :D

Thanks for doing the lithium mod, Brien, and for everything so far!

contact "yellowdog" here on KLOV. He is great with williams boards. He fixed my stargate when I came to the end of my rope with it. Great person to deal with!

Couple other interesting things...

I can pull the 5101 and the 4071 off the board, and I get the same results.

  • Re-flowed the pins of the ROM Cable Header.
  • Double checked the Sockets for the 5101 and 4071.

Making sure I'm following along... the hacked harness is eliminated because the board is misbehaving on the bench, right? Broken trace or prior owner repair solder bridge somewhere?

There are a couple of other logic devices which are part of the r/w control of the 5101...

You have a 7404 and 7408 driving one leg of that 4071, those should be checked as well... as lock out switch can prevent writes to that device.

Correct.

Checked for broken traces, didn't see any. Might have missed one though if they are below a socket or something. Board is pretty clean though.

Ok, I'll check those out later when I get home. Thanks!

Greedbump. :D

Also, Brien, I meant to bring that KC sideart with me today, and spaced. I also need to bring over the button set I got from JimKirk... Wish I hadn't bought those switches from Bob Roberts now, but ah well...

Well, I've been going through all my Defender boards and filling them with all the missing components (RAM, CPU, ROMs, and some of the TTLS) trying to find one that works. I got most of these stripped so I have to assume that none are working, but if I can find one with a different issue, I can use it to compare to yours.

Lack of time has been the biggest issue right now. :(

No rush at all, man. I truly appreciate your helping me with this. Rather, doing everything, really.

I feel kinda bad it's in your face all the time, though. LMK if you need it out of your way at any point.

Good news!

Jawn's board is now up and running.

It appears to have been a colder solder joint on 5B. It was the last chip in the section that hadn't been replaced and it seemed to be testing fine with Logic Probe, so I decided to just go ahead and replace it anyway just in case.

Well, I removed the old chip, put a socket in, and put in a new 74LS04 and it worked just fine. I then swapped that chip with the original one and it still works just fine.

When I pull a chip, if something changes, I always try the original again just to verify that it is indeed bad. If nothing changes, the original part goes back in.

See if keeps working long-term. I've had bad luck with the lithium battery conversion in the Defender's. Kept draining the battery every 3-4 days, even with new blocking diodes...

Brien, I can swing by today if you're sick of it being in your garage for so long. Thanks so much again, I owe you some money/bee... sodas/pizza/printed goods at the very least! ;)

My Defender has a lithium in it and seems to be ok. I wonder if I just got lucky with my Defender or if you're just having bad luck?

They do appear to drain quicker then most applications for the battery, and maybe faster then AA's, but it's nice peace of mind knowing it's not going to leak all over the board.

I may need to hold onto it for a few more days as I need to test some more of my boards.

...as long as you need to, then! ;)

I've had a few complaints that I show too many gratuitous shots of scantily-clad wimmens jumping/backflipping... You guys think so? Or am I good?

I know this is an old thread but exactly which IC's did you replace to fix this issue? I am having the EXACT same problem. I replaced the 5101 4071 and socketed the 7404 and 7408. Same issue. I have also recapped the board and rebuilt the linear power supply.
