The start buttons on my Defender sometimes don't work when I turn the game on , but after 10 minutes they work . Any ideas ? When they're not working I've jiggled the wires and switches for the buttons and it does nothing . I go play another game for awhile , come back and the start buttons work again .

Assuming the switches and wires are ok (you checked them, right?), my first guess would be a cracked solder joint on the header pins of the Interface board. Second would be a bad connection between the header pins and the connector on the wiring harness. Third would be a bad PIA on the Interface board, fourth would be a bad IC2 - the leftmost 4909 chip.

I would agree, except that he tried jiggling wires; I'm gonna place my bets on the PIA; I doubt the 4909 CMOS chip is bad.

The bad news is: it is almost cheaper and more reliable to get a new IO board.

If you opt to replace the I/O board, be aware, the Defender pinouts are upside down from the Stargate and later I/O boards.

You can buy a later I/O card and use it with the Defender if you flip the connectors over and jam them on backwards. Or let me know. I recently built an adapter for another KLOVer, I could price one out for you if you don't want to build one for yourself.

I'm only mentioning it because Defender I/O boards are getting to be a somewhat hard to find commodity and if you can use a later I/O board, you can find them a lot easier and more cheaply. Plus about half the I/O cards identified as Defender I/O cards on ePay aren't Defender cards.

Thanks Ken ! That sounds like what I'm gonna do . I need to trouble shoot a little more and see if I'm missing something like loose wires , but I'm really starting to think its the I/O board . I was playing today and during gameplay ALL the controls would stop working and then after 30 seconds they'd come back on again . So its not just the start buttons .
