My $39 ebay 100% Working Defender Sound Board didn't work when I plugged it in today... I'm asking the seller to refund me $20 for a broken Sound Board, but it'll cost me more than that to fix it.

I was going through the Williams Recap Sound & Speech pdf to diagnose my board and I changed the 6802 cpu and sound rom from my good working sound board to the bad sound board but it still didn't give sound. Now the pdf says touch jumper W-15 but that jumper is not listed anywhere in the Drawing Set pdf. So how do I check my audio amplifier circuit if it's good / bad before I go to diagnose the IC's if they're bad.

- I fixed my bad Stargate Sound Board by diagnosing a bad Sound ROM; I exchanged the Rom on my good board to the bad board and then it worked fine. So I ordered a sound rom from hobbyroms.com.

Check the two dip switches on the sound card. They should both be set to off (the switches on the side marked open should be down).

The attached photo shows the locations of the jumpers for each of the video games:

W15 is the smudgy blue jumper at the bottom of the picture just above W1 near the connectors. I circled it in red.

Thanks for your reply Yellowdog but the bad ebay sound card is a Defender one. Here is my reply email from the ebay seller -

i took this out of our working cocktail, just send it back & i will keep it & refix it & just refund your money, only certain main Williams PCBs work with the original sound board, but since you know so much just return it for a refund as i have a buyer more up to date on williams games, i own an arcade, i am the repair man, find out before you just assume. www.DeansArcade.com

So it seems a cocktail Defender Sound Card might not work with an upright Defender? My Defender has the later series boards.

Both Defender Sound Boards are marked IC-2001-137-4

Nope... there is no difference between upright and cocktail.

Also you said its a "Defender" you are talking about the earlier series that are longer and more rectangular than the one YellowDog pictured? Either way still no difference... that earlier version will work with any Defender... it simply cant be converted to work with any other Williams game.

Based on the quote from your seller (and I have to admit I read it 3 times and am still not sure WTF he is talking about), I would send it back and get a refund. The early sound boards are very cranky and don't have the jumpers that the later sound boards have. When you said jumper W15, it is only on the later boards (1B-2001-146-xx) like the one in the picture.

The early sound boards, like the one you bought on Ebay, will only run Defender and Stargate. The later ones will run everything, based on the jumpers and the sound ROMs. I have a stack of them to go through and test. Give me a day or so & I should be able to find a working Defender sound board. PM me for details.
