If the HS save doesn't work, where should I look.
Also I've asked this question before but it's odd cause I can't seem to adjust the difficulty setting in the menu. I'm following the dirrections but for some reason it doesn't allow for changes. Very odd...

First thing is first... are you using a switching power supply or the original Defender linear power supply?

If you make a change to your settings and they are erased when you cycle power or if your high scores are erased when you power cycle... your batteries are likely dead or your battery holder is crap (causing the batteries to not make contact with the circuit)

If you make changes to your settings and they don't take (without cycling power) you could have one of a few things ...

1. The coin door interlock switch is boogered up (its used to protect the CMOS settings)
2. The CMOS RAM itself is bad
3. The CMOS RAM select logic is bad there are a couple of chip enable lines that are driven by the CPU and gated by that interlock switch.

What error messages do you get? That is a clue to which of the 3 common things RA listed above.

Original Defender PS. Everything is original. I'll put a meeter on the back of the battery pack to make sure all of the juice goes through and adds up right.

I actually found that one prong was off on the coin interlock switch and I soldered it back on. This was after my problems with the settings changes not working.

thanks guys ... it was the coin door... I got it adjusted... just no HS yet.
I may try to test the batteries again.
