Been working on getting my Defender running again. I did this:

1) Booted it up a few times. Worked fine.
2) At some point the video got wonky. . seemed like the game wasn't playing properly (no audio, etc.)
3) Rebooted a few times. . no luck.
4) Installed the Defender harness for a JROK Multi-Williams to see if that works.
5) Booted up fine.
6) Played a game of Defender on the JROK board.
7) Hit player 1 start and player 2 start. . it froze up. Constant video image as if the video backend of the hardware is running but the CPU isn't (maybe).
8) Plugged the JROK into a different harness with a different monitor and a modern jamma-style power supply. . . still working (whew!)
9) Look around back and noticed that the -5 Volt LED wasn't on.
10) Went out an bought the appropriate 1ASB fuses.
11) Swapped out the fuse and booted up the JROK board.
12) Played a game of Stargate.
13) Hit the player 1 start and player 2 start to go back to menu again. . same deal as before. Video is alive but no game loop running.
14) Looked in back. . same -5 Volt LED is off again.
15) Plugged JROK board into the alternate setup again. . works fine.

Any idea what's wrong with the power supply? Should I get a rebuild kit from Bob Roberts and just rebuild it? Anything else I should try?

Thanks!
Gary

You need to recap the ps at a minimum, and test the BR3. This is a good item for the upcoming repair party.

Thanks again! Dang you are responsive! :)

I may go ahead and try those fixes myself and save the scarier monitor stuff for the repair party. :) I'd like to redo everything (short of caps since they were already done by Paladin) on my Defender monitor or possibly try to repair an Asteroids Deluxe monitor that is broken. Not sure which one is more appropriate. Either way, I better get some parts on the way soon. Do either one of those sound appropriate for a repair party?

I bought a nice temperature-controller soldering iron yesterday.

I have some caps to replace on an Asteroids Deluxe main board (and maybe more), but I think I'll hold of on that since I have a working board for that on the way.
