Defender..no response from anything inside the door

So I'm trying to bring my defender back from the dead...the game was on loan fr the last 13 years thus I wasn't expecting much when I got it back Here's what I've done..

I installed a switcher (just for testing now.. I'll probably rebuild the PS) The switcher is a Bob Roberts thus he did the wiring for the Williams stuff. With this I at least got the machine to boot but it went right to the rug test and stayed there

I reflowed the pins on the main PCB and the ROM board. I now get what I remember as the boot test screen where it asked to press the 'advance button' to run through the test

The 4 lights on the ROM board blink twice then stay off (couldn't fine anything on a search here for the 'blink code')

I've tested continuity from the coin door wires to the ROM board.

So right now the game boots...all the lights in the coin do work fine however none of the test buttons work

I'm thinking possible a ribbon cable issue or maybe the ROM board it self?

I few more details..
I do have 5.05 volts at the back of the CPU board and ROM board.

I tried jumper the switches onside the door

Confirmed that the switcher is wired properly (minus the -12) and made sure that it was grounded

So I'm making progress..

I am able to groundthe pins on the ROM board and get all the functions of the coin door.

No button or coin slots work

Looks like I got a busted ground somewhere

Yep. Whenever a bunch of stuff isn't working right, always suspect your grounds. Also, review any previous work you find... I.e. previous wiring hacks, etc. You can't assume that previous technicians knew what they were doing, or that their previous repair didn't fail again.

By installing the switcher, you have taken away the ground for the coin door switches. The lamps work, because they are AC not DC.

I had the same issue on a repair job. I ran a ground wire from the switcher to the ground on the originan P/S and that solved the problem......

I will say I got a nice u-hacked harness. All the connected even had the caps still on them

I did figure the ground\switcher and used an alligator clip to ground the ground from the coin door to the switcher.

Now the switches\coin credit sometimes works and sometime just does shit on it's own.

I ordered some replacement switches from BR...and the battery kit for the Williams

Nice to have a game back after 10+ years. Really surprised how well the monitor still looks...
