defender help

Last time I lost a single function like that on Defender, all I had to do was remove and reinstall the control panel connectors on the I/O (Interface) board. It could be the switch on the joystick too.

I agree. Check the connectors but first I'd look for corrosion on the leaf switch, it also may need to be adjusted. If this doesn't work check for continuity across the switch and in the wires from the switch to the connector. If everything looks good you can start hunting for a replacement interface board. I replaced mine last month when it failed but I had lost all controls to the ship so the solution was obvious.

If your switches, connector and wiring check out okay, and assuming you have a multimeter, it's worth checking the resistors and ICs at the inputs of the interface board before replacing the whole thing. One of the joystick directions on my Joust stopped working a few months ago, and it ended up to be caused by a dead I/O on one of the inverters. It was only a $0.50 part and a few minutes of soldering to replace it.

hi,the interface board i just bought, was sold too me as working?im new at this how do i know if its the switch thats bad?thanks for the help.

Put your DMM into continuity mode and clip to the Move up line and ground and then press the button. It should show continuity to ground when the button is pressed. If it doesn't then that gives you a place to start.

By inspection, if you open the control panel up, you should be able to see if the up leag switches are making contact. If they are not, you can carefully bend them until they make contact when the button is pushed.

It sometimes helps to clean the contacts. Do not use sandpaper. Take a business card or an indes card and place between the contacts, press the button (so that it squeezes the card between the contacts) and slide the card out. You may need to do this several times. The contacts are gold plated and using sandpaper will take the gold off subjectint the contacts to wearing out.

hi,i removed the control panel and the switch is rusty,i tightened the switch now it goes up,two games in not working again?maybe the switch is no good, thanks

Also check the ground connection to the bad switch. You may have made a temporary reconnection when you were fiddling with it. And while you are at it check for continuity when you close the switch, it may still need cleaning.
