HELP ! – I have a Williams defender that up until this week worked perfect. Now the player 1 button will not work but as soon as I put a 2nd credit in, it will start a 2 player game automatically. I am completely stupid when it comes to video games. I have replaced the back up batteries with new ones and removed the control panel and checked all the cables and switches and it all looks OK –any ideas would be greatly appreciated, as it's a little annoying ?

Thanks in advance

Scott

The player 2 button is stuck on. Double check your control panel connections and reseat the connection going from the control panel to the tiny board inside.

Can you place th4e game in switch test mode? Unlug the control panel from the widget [I/O] board and tell us the the P2 startis still stuck.

You may have a fried PIA on the widget board.

I had the, kinda, same issue with my Robotron (coin switch 1 stuck high). Ended up being a chip on the widget board needed to the replaced. If you have a logic probe, it really doesn't take anymore than 5-10mins to figure out what chip is bad.

Thanks Drewster ........... It worked !, I so glad it was a simple fix as I'm so electronically challenged !

Thanks also to saltbreez & scucci for taking the time to reply !

I have one more question ! I'm thinking about building a new control panel for the Defender from scratch using HAPP buttons with micro switches but the micro switches have 3 connectors, can this be done by leaving one of the connectors on the HAPP m/s off (I think this makes sence ?) – Sorry to sound so dumb but I'm learning !

Thanks again

Yes. The microswitches have three connections: common (COM) which is connected to ground, normally open (NO) which is connected to the I/O board and normally closed (NC) which is left unconnected.

While you may get some flack about the clicky feel to microswitch vs. leaf switches, it is your game you do what you think is the right thing.

my opinion is to keep the switches original. instead of replacing them, i would install new electrolytic capacitors on the power supply, CPU board, monitor chassis and anywhere else i find them. while i had the boards on my bench, i'd reflow all the header pins with new solder, replace all pins inside the connectors, install the lithium battery backup and even replace the ribbon cables for some long lasting fun.

Thanks for the info Ken, Thats why I want to build it from scratch, so I can keep the origanol CP and just swop them over when I want !
