Hello everyone!]

i have been tasked with repairing a Williams Defender. the boards and everything are original, though it looks like they have been looked at by somebody back in 2006-2009, as there are little sticky notes on some of the chips and things saying "input ok" or "use 41256 RAMS not 4116".

the owner has not run this machine since around that time, as there was something that happened with the monitor (he couldnt remember) and then some other guy decided to put a conversion board and a flat screen in there, though he never completed the job so ive spent the past few weeks getting everything back together and getting rid of that conversion board.

according to the great folks over on the monitor side of this forum i have it basically fixed. the attached image is what ive currently got...its like the snow channel but the fuzz doesnt move, its stationary, except every ten or 15 seconds the screen wipes from left to right as if it is showing a new graphic or menu or something, but nothing is really discernable through the fuzz.

i cant seem to get it to pop into any sort of a test or setup menu...the buttons in the coin door dont do anything (visually or audibly), neither do the coin switches. or player start/fire buttons, etc. the game makes a game noise when you first apply power, but nothing after that. if you hit the reset switch on the cpu board all 4 led's light up momentarily, but then stay off, so that doesnt seem right.

the power source is not original, but it is putting out +/- 5 and 12 vdc as desired, so im thinking thats all probably ok.

so thats where i am at. i have just about no idea where to go next, and this is like my third or fourth arcade game repair, so i am by no means an expert. hell, im barely a hobbyist, really. so please bear with me, im probably going to say some stupid stuff and embarrass myself a couple times!

thanks in advance for any help you guys can give me, i really appreciate it!

did you try what I suggested in the other thread?

all your snow is what is referred to as the rug pattern. lol

and me without my shoe-phone... youd think by now id get smart and wear it all the time.

that might have been my first dad joke. i feel dirty.

i have pressed all the socketed chips, and i unfortunately have the same result. the 4 LED's simply show nothing on a fresh power-on. if you turn it on and reset it with the switch on the board, the 4 LED's will flash only once in unison and then nothing.

i know that doesnt help.

thanks!

stragely, if i leave the machine on for a bit and hit reset, the sound does not play. if i leave it off for a few seconds longer, it will play the first part of the sound and then cut off. if i turn it off and wait even longer, it will play more of the sound but still cut out.

i realize that is an irrelevant symptom of the problem, i just thought id say something.

im waiting on some connectors so i can try a test pattern generator on the work ive done top the monitor. if everything checks out alright there, im probably going to tell the owner to send the boards out and have them repaired, as this is not my wheel house at all.
