My Defender controls seem to have intermittent and getting worse controls problems where essentially buttons and joystick stop working. I replaced the wiring harness with a reproduction (thanks Okert!) and have tried swapping the little pcb controls board with a known working one, so I know neither are the source of my problem. If this is a board problem, any suggestion on what I should be looking for? I've never worked on Defender boards (and am not very experienced on working on boards, but I can do some level of testing and replace anything on them that's a known problem).

Thanks in advance! This has been driving me crazy.

That sounds like an intermittent ground issue. A common place for this to go bad is at the plugs between the IO board cables and the control panel cables.

When the joystick & buttons go out, is it just one or two or is it all of them. If it is all of them, break out the DMM and check the continuity of the ground wires. Or just build a long jumper cable and run it from the first ground connection on the controll panel back to one of the screws on the IO board (assuming your boards are mounted on the metal panel). This will give an alternate path to ground. If it doesn't fail when the jumper is connected, you have a bad ground wire connection somewhere.
