My Defender has a random problem...
After the game has been on for a short time - I lose control of the "UP" control on the joystick - I can still dip down to the bottom of the screen but cant go up. Then after the game has been off for a while I have control again just fine...
What's the deal and how do I fix this???

Can you isolate the problem to either the Widget [I/O] board or the wiring too the I/O board.

Let the game cool down. Put the game into switch test mode.
Reproduce the problem. Remove the control panel connections to the I/O board. Take a ground wire and locate the header pin responsible for 'up'.
Replace the control panel connections to the header. Reproduce the problem; let the game warm up. Remove the the control panel connections to the header. Take your ground wire and see if the indicated pin will register 'up' on switch test.

Either your 6821 PIA is going bad on the I/O board, or you have a ground wireing problem [could be a dirty leaf switch].

Hope this helps,

Sounds like a crappy connection at the widget to me.

Yeah me too - I will double check that connection from the control panel to the IO board or whatever that is called that the control panel plugs into. Its strange though that it only does it when the game warms up... I tend to think it might be something like the previous KLOV'r responded that the board is GOING BAD...

Just resolder all the header pins on the widget and all connections leading to and from it. Worked like a charm for me.

Sounds like one of the 4049's on the I/O board is going out. The PIA's tend to be all or nothing.
