I wish I had a Stainless version, but alas, I do not. What I do have is a nicely stripped coin door waiting for paint, but wanted some input. Any ideas on how to reproduce the textured finish on a black Defender coin door? I am searching the net for solutions, but haven't found much beyond hammered finishes and some textured finishes that aren't quite right. Any help is appreciated.

I laid down a coat of semi-gloss black, let it dry, then put my trigger finger about half way in front of the spray from the bomb can nozzle to let it collect and blow off my finger in bigger drops and made multiple fast passes, which did a decent job of recreating the correctly textured look. I practiced on other things quite a bit, first.

I've read this one a couple of times. I think some practice is required before I try it on the door.

Has anyone played with a paint sprayer? I know mine is capable of spitting out pretty good gobs of paint when I don't have it adjusted properly.

Screwing around with this one in the garage is sure to produce some snide remarks from the wife.....

I will be quite interested in how this comes out, high res pics requested!

Thanks in advance,

I did try this out on some plywood first to get a spray pattern and was happy enough to try it on the door. Well, I probably should have practiced a bit more. That will teach me to be cocky.

Easy enough to get the gun to puke gobs of paint. Just do the opposite of everything you should do get a fine mist and go with it. So I didn't thin the paint, I cranked down the air pressure and opened up the amount of paint going through. So far so good. The hard part is getting it even without painting it too much. So I ended up with something a little too textured for my liking. I did find some scrap pieces of sheet metal in the garage, so back to the drawing board. I think as soon as I figure out the right distance away from the piece and the speed of the passes over it I should be able to get it pretty close to the original (I hope).

Here's some pics anyways.

Use spray on bed liner, found at automotive stores. I did my Ms Pac and really like the look.

I haven't tried it, but it seems like you could probably get a similar finish by painting with a sponge to get the texture.

well this answers my question about whether Defenders actually came with the black doors. lol the silver pinball style doors must have been from the earlier runs right?

mine was a later 1981 one.. surprisingly the coin door on mine's in decent condition, I'll have to keep this in mind if I ever wanted to repaint it though.
