Just traded for a Defender this morning. I have noticed that the sound doesnt have as deep of a sound as the past two Defenders I have had. It seems to be missing a lot of the bass and lower depth notes. Its almost like the speaker is blown. The sounds themselves arent missing like a ROM issue, its just an audio quality issue.

I havent tried another speaker, as I dont have one at the moment, but could it be that it has a new hacked-in power supply? Can that cause audio issues? And if not, what else can cause it?

Most switchers don't have the -12 VDC so they use the -5V to drive the sound card. This can have a detrimental effect on the sound quality. Back the Defender up to another Williams game and connect the speaker wires across. That will tell you if it is the speaker. There should be enough slack in the speaker wire from the sound card to the connector to get to the other cabinet.

Unfortunately I dont have another Williams game to try it out with except Pinbot, and I really dont want to take the guy apart to test the speaker. It has a Suzo-Happ ATX-style power supply. Any way to fudge a -12 line?

Its possible the caps in the signal path on the sound board need replacing, but check the speaker first. Remove it from the cab and check to see that the cone moves freely. It should not be stuck....it should move easily when you push lightly in the center, and shouldn't make any scraping sounds.

Speakers can fail in strange ways (shorted turns on the coil, etc), so just try another speaker before doing much else.

LyonsArcade was the winner! Capped the sound board and the audio is crystal clear and sounds amazing! :)
