Defective Tempest Control Panel Overlay from AS

Well, just got around to installing my new control panel overlay for my Tempest that I purchased from Arcadeshop.

I didn't notice this bubble until I was peeling the paper off of the back.
(I was 2/3rd of the way done applying the overlay)

As I was pealing the paper, the red circle completely started coming off
of the plastic, so I stopped and pealed the paper from the otherside in hopes of not completely destroying. You can see here the separation.

After spending about 30 minutes trying to press down and working the air out, I had this:

After a little more time, I gave up and installed the control panel back on my Tempest.

Thought please?
Has this happened to anyone else?

This has happened to me with my Mappy, but due to me trying to pull the overlay back up to fudge the alignment. I'm not sure why it would happen like it did to you though. :(

I can confirm that heating it up will help ALOT if not totally fix that seperation issue. even a hair dryer on high and some patience will help. it really looks like what happens if you apply and then lift and reapply too many times. I can attest that if you havent done alot of cpo's that you will get better at it with practice. if need be reorder it if you cant get it perfect. if you dont it will nag the shit out of ya

Would you guys think this might help an overlay that was applied a few years ago? As I said my Mappy has a few spots like that and I'd consider giving it a try if it would help.

Heh, our Mappy overlay had this type of thing happen also. Maybe I'll try the high heat thing on it sometime.

Of course after my previous post I had to go look at my Mappy overlay again. It's not bad honestly and I've learned to live with it. I may give it a shot with my heat gun sometime anyway.

I got a Ms Pac from AS and the damned graphics separated just from peeling the backing paper. Nothing I could do to fix it. Went ahead and installed it and it looks like $HiT!!!

I've had this happen a couple times - with different suppliers. Usually I contact the seller with pics and they replace it....

It may not be a hot laminate. When I worked in the print shop, most of the laminate was cold mounted with pressure rollers.

Use a Heat gun or hair dryer?
I don't want to melt the CPO.

Thank you,
Steve

Heat gun. Start out further away, about a foot, and see what happens. Get a little closer until the overlay gets real hot but not melty. Remove heat and immediately press down on the problem areas (might burn your fingers a little, be careful).

Yes, I thought about that also. But since I had the overlay 2/3 install and didn't really want to re-strip and start over, I was hoping I could smooth it out.
But once I put the spinner on, it doesn't look completely bad and think I might be able to live with it.

Here's what it looked like finished.

Steve, That looks like Shit!! Bring It down, I have a old control panel I can trade you:D

Don't use heat to attempt to fix silkscreened art, you'll just make it worse. There's no lamination involved with that kind of art so there's no adhesive to soften and restick.

I've had that happen on a Multiwilliams overlay I got from AS. The unfortunate part for me was I didnt notice it happened until I sold it to someone else and got a nasty PM from them...

Pr0k - heat doesn't work, does anything?

I had it happen on a Stargate overlay from Arcade Shop. When I removed the backing, some of the yellow color layer stayed on the backing and pulled off of the CPO. I was able to back up and pull it off from the other direction, but it never looked perfect after that.

I've tried a lot of things to fix this over the years on NOS overlays. My best luck has been using krylon triple thick or triple glaze and a syringe with a tiny flexible hose on it. I just spray the triple thick into a cap or something enough to suck up into the syringe.. then snake the hose between the areas that lifted and squeeze a little triple thick in there, then press it down on a flat surface until it dries.
