Dedicated NBA Jam/Mortal Kombat 3 Sideart Coming Soon...

Hey guys. Thought I'd throw this out there. I'll make dedicated threads with updates when the time comes. I recently acquired a WWF Wrestlemania that has a trashed CPO. I looked all over the interwebs and NO ONE had a scan available or a reproduction.

So I took the CPO down to a local print show who specialize in photo restoration. They took high res pics of the CPO and used their decades of experience (one of the workers has been using Photoshop since it was first released) to fix my panel. Here is how it turned out...

So, keep your fingers crossed, but I'm planning on gutting (just for ease of transportation and handling) my MK3 and NBA Jam, and taking the cabs down to get high res pics of the MINT sideart taken, cleaned up in PS and make them available to all you fellow gamers.

Now, I'm going to pay for this out of my own pocket, and based on what it cost me for just the CPO (granted it took a lot of work and the sideart shouldn't), I'd like to receive donations up to a point to cover the cost, but it's not 100% necessary.

I just want to share because I know there are people who say to themselves every time they see their faded/messed up artwork "Man, if only there were scans."

Well, soon there might be. Stay tuned

(Edit: Oh, I wanted to add that yes, gameongrafix has MK3 sideart, but the dimensions are wrong and the "3" in the corner is not correct and is not in the correct location compared to the dedicated machine.)

Cool! tho my nba jam is all set some MK3 artwork that is as good as dedicated is definitely welcomed, let me know when you start taking donations.

This would be amazing. Will gladly donate as i want to get a nba jam and will be looking for mk3 as i am trying to get all the machines. Thanks for this. If it goes well, maybe mk2 as well. How about your mk1 mint control panel as there are no scans out there of that.

This is beyond great.

Ozzman was going to scan MK3 at some point, but it looks like he handed it off your way in another thread.

Please do everyone a huge favor and keep the halftones from the original print intact! I've spoke to many folks who thought they were going to go with the GoG prints until they realized that the source files are far from perfect.

I don't know how you feel about getting these scans to Rich, but it seems he too has interest in seeing the MK series taken care of. Would be a great printing option.

The JAM is also a huge deal. Is this a TE or a regular? I know Ozzman may work on the TE...would be awesome for both to become available.

Keep everyone up on the cost to you, so we can donate appropriately.

I've sat on my dedicated MK3 for almost 10 years now waiting for someone to properly show it some reproduction love.

Yeah zeno is gonna do the MK3, and his Jam is regular. Which is awesome cuz then when Mikonos is done with mine we will have both versions of NBA Jam available. Heres a pic of me scanning the dedicated NBA Jam TE cab.. I did a video of it and will post the whole process on youtube. :D

Really looking forward to the video.

The more folks comfortable with doing this sort of thing, the more artwork will get preserved.

what DPI do you scan it all in at?

The final product will most likely be 300dpi. This place does such great work, I have every confidence that they will produce something outstanding. I wouldn't worry about the halftones and things like that.

Now.....

Try not to get TOO psyched about this. I have to give them a call when I get home and make sure they can even do this. I am sure they can. Even if they can't get the entire side of the cab in one shot, they can get it in sections and stitch it.

I'll try and get the process started around the first of October. I get home from Afghanistan the 28th of this month. It took nearly 3 weeks just to get the WWF CPO done. They are so good that they get pretty much all the business of the entire city, so they are backlogged pretty consistently. As long as they do as good of a job as I hope they can, it will be worth the wait.

Here's the site if you guys wanna check 'em out. All I ask is that you don't try and contact them. Let me take care of everything as I have worked with them before and they might show favoritism towards me over a voice on the phone as we have worked together before with the CPO.

Couldn't you use a SLR camera that way you wouldn't have to stitch so many pieces.

Yes but since Im doing it in a dark low light storage unit it would be too dark. The image would have to be exposed pretty good. And the graphic artist I send my scans to prefers scans..

Well. Looks like it's a go! Just got off the phone with the shop and they said they've actually done this kind of thing before. I have an appointment to bring the machines (NBA Jam and MK3) in this Thursday to get shot. I'm not going to have them touch anything up in PS because the art on my cabs is so good, it's not worth paying them to do what some of the guys here can do.

I'll report back when they give me a time frame of when to expect the cabs and the images back. Stay tuned!

Sweet it'll be interesting to see how the halftones and stippling come out.

This is going to be awesome, cant wait and will gladly donate. Hopefully we can get more done like mk2, etc

Yes, this is what I'm really hoping for/worried about.

GoG has MK3 out there...but all of the halftones/stippling is lost.

Do you have plans to take the scans afterwards and get them to someone for touchup...or are you just going to release it into the wild and let whoever wants to take a stab at it?

Would love to see Rich (ToG) do what he does so well.

...or are you just going to release it into the wild and let whomever wants to take a stab at it?

Well, being that they charged me $300 to shoot and fix my WWF CPO, I'm just going to have them shoot the side of each cabinet that looks the best and release the pics to the wild. They will need so little touch up that I am sure there are people here that know PS well enough to give them the love they need.

I am confident the shop will produce excellent images.

That was done with an HD photo? I thought it was scanned, interesting... very interested in the results.

No, they can't scan stuff that big. What they do is set the item up for lighting, distance, etc. Then they take HD pictures and final touch them in PS. I'm going to skip the last part for $$ reasons.
