Since I'm spending the next 3 months hand painting my Phoenix pinball playfield I figure I need a really hard permanent coating. It would seem that a nice thick decoupage would fit the bill and protect the artwork. Has anyone done this before?

Don't bother with the decoupage. Playfield finishes have been discussed quite a bit, especially in the rec.games.pinball newsgroup. People generally either use automotive urethane clearcoat or a water based (so it won't yellow) furniture type spray finish.

go to www.marvin3m.com/fix.htm and find the info about clearcoating your playfield. There's a lot of info to digest, but it will be worth it. You'll also need to test that the paints you are using won't bleed/smear when clearcoating.

specifically "Pinball Restoration Guide" and "Clear Coating Playfields with Automotive Clears"

There are also a bunch of articles on specific playfield touchup projects, which are well worth reading, with good pics.

I wonder if minwax clear polyurothane spray is a good one? It's self leveling so it wont have any texture, UV resistant, and very durable for use on heavy use furniture etc...

AUTO CLEARCOAT WITH MIX IN HARDNER. apply with hvlp spray gun( cheap at harbor frieght)

COntrary to popular belief omni au is still made and sold( at least in my area) and for some reaon thats the clear of choice among pinheads. i just use the budget brand "xtreme" clearcoat for alL MY GAMES CARS whatever.. works well sprays nice looks nice. Durable, sandes and buffs out well and my cost is about $ 68 a gallon with hardner. orieleys also sells a nice budget brand of clear behind the counter.
