Dear reverse engineering people

Yeah, I'm starting to worry about my Gorf's future.

I wonder if it would make more sense to have an FPGA replacement board for this series, or possibly replacing certain boards in the stack.

that one with the wavy heatsink. I think that and the tantalum caps are among the highest failures on Astrocade hardware.

At the risk of insulting the vintage console fans, I was able to source two Astrocades (same deal) local on Craigslist for great price and all six customs worked fine.

It's a judgement call, but considering the value of each I would vote to sacrifice the Astrocade for the Gorf/WOW.

Caius is really good at this stuff

I've been reading his blogs and visiting his websites for a while gleaning information from him. He and a few of his buddies make replacement parts for custom chips and might be interested in such a project.

There's a die shot of the SC-01A Votrax chip and MOS gate schematic out there. Currently I am trying to break it down into discrite components.( I am just a noob at this. Not my field of expertise. )Then just have a Votrax board that plugs into socket by ribbon cable. Someone software emulated the MOS gate schematic, but FPGAs are not the answer.

The community "NEEDS" die shots for the other AMI customs. If anybody has some dead chips, maybe get them to Ken Shirriff so he can decap and photograph the dies.

The Bally patent 5,301,503, might have some hidden details and schematics on the customs. But what was patented and what actually is on the die probably isn't even close.

Those die shots/images are HUGE! too big to attach here, so i'll directly host them:
