Deal or No Deal, ICE Redemption game, more problems

I thought I would start another thread because the one I first started was getting pretty long and this might be a different problem. I first want to thank PCJohn for going above and beyond the duties of a fellow form member for helping me with my DOND problems. I really appreciated his help.

My DOND crapped out and I had to replace the motherboard and power supply. I also installed a new red I/O pcb, the board on the right, looking in from the back.
After much difficulty it finally started working except for the suitcase buttons. Once the game is turned on all of the buttons light solid but when the computer boots only the bottom half light and then when the game comes up the bottom set of buttons start flickering real fast and none of the buttons register in the test mode or the game mode. You can start a game with the start buttons but the rest of the suitcase buttons don't work.

I had a problem with the serial port and found out that it is wired different on some motherboards. Could this be the same kind of thing for the parallel port? I think the parallel port cable controls the buttons.

Any ideas or experience with this one? PCJohn if your still out there, Have you seen this?

Thanks again,
Russ

Did you call ICE support?

Sounds crazy, I don't recall if there is a switching power supply for the "jamma board" (I use that loosely) but maybe the 5volt line is weak.

If it's a PC based game check the BIOS settings for the parallel port. There are typically three settings: Standard, EPP (enhanced parallel port, a.k.a. bi-directional), and ECP (adds in DMA channels for extra speed)...

You DO NOT want it to be on Standard.

For what it's worth, I've had two common problems with DOND;
24vdc power supply for monitor failing
Processor cooling fan failing (ice uses the same Pc on other games, so having those on hand is wise)

Seems like parallel port pinouts would be a good place to start. Did you get the sound
working with the update CD ?

Yes, the sound did work, thankfully, and it looks great and everything else seems fine except for the problem I mentioned. I still don't understand the theory of operations on this game. What does what and how it does it.

I did go through the BIOS settings and changed them for the parallel port, along with trying the safe boot settings. I was hoping that was it, but nope.

I will take a closer look at the 5v but I put that PS on a load tester before reinstalling it and it checked out just fine.

I plan on calling ICE but as I just learned when they insisted that the message "Connect I/O" means the red I/O board when it really refers to the JAMMA board. The ICE people don't always know what is going on with their games.

The more I think about it, it has to be in the parallel I/O part. I think the computer through the parallel port sends out which button to light to the I/O board and and that lights the suitcase bulbs in the same way a pinball lights bulbs or fires solenoids. Maybe there is a problem with the motherboard connector. I will check it tomorrow.
Thanks
Russ

Looks like the switching supply only powers the red I/o board on right. I had issues before with the "jamma" board on left, I had a bad connection/wire to my start buttons or my coin switch. Been so long I can't remember. But I ended up running a few new wires from the jamma to the buttons

Really has to be the port connector. Are you certain you didn't
put the IDC connector on backwards ? They are usually all pinned
the same, the red lead needs to go to pin 1 on the motherboard connector.

Again, without one in front of me I can't be certain, but I think the parport IO
board is nothing but a bunch of shift registers and latches. If it's not connected
pin for pin you will see weird issues.

I am going down there shortly and will take a real close look at that connector. I just wanted to post what ICE support told me. They said that the game uses a custom BIOS on the computer and that the problems are the parallel port or the sound won't work. They told me it comes custom from the vendor with the motherboard. I am really skeptical of this info but they that is what they told me what happens when the mother board is not replaced by them. Has anyone done a motherboard replacement that didn't work? I am sure there were many done that did. They said I would need to buy a whole new computer. Is this their way of generating parts sales?

That's a load of Twinkie stuffing. Yes, there is a custom Bios which displays
PLAY MECHANIX when the machine starts up, but that's the end of it. I've done 4
repairs using $35 Jetway motherboards and had no problem. The only issue is
there are no NJ software updates so I can't get sound with the NJ version on the
Jetway mobos. I've also had one running with a Fast and Furious Biostar mobo.

ICE didn't design this game, Play Mechanix did. ICE wants your $1200 for
a new computer.

One of the reasons I really wanted to post these problems and their solutions regarding this ICE game is because of how awful their support is. There are very few places to get this type of info about ICE. I am sure there are tons of operators who just drop the 1200.00 thinking that is their only way to resolve the problem. Well it isn't.

My DOND is finally working. It was the parallel port connector that went from the motherboard to the bracket. I had it on wrong. I learned a lot from this one. This saved me a lot of money and I hope this info saves others some money. I will try and find an online place to post the CD you sent me in case others need it.

When I get some time I am going to try and keep learning how to disassemble their the install CD and figure out how to add or remove drivers.

Thanks again John,
Russ

Not sure ICE would like you posting a CD that they sell.

Anyway, you're welcome. My last employer probably had a couple
hundred PC based games and I came up with a lot of solutions to
keep them running without spending a lot of money (hear that Eric,
you clueless dope ? Did I say that out loud ?)

Great information !

I thought I would keep this going as I have a DOND with a ASRock N68C-GS FX blue motherboard using V.01.04.04 software. I have no sound. I know that this particular motherboard had been serviced in 2015 with the same issue according to the service tag on the case. I've reloaded the software to still no sound. Do you think using software V. 01.06.08 would resolve my issue ? Thanks in advance. Ja
