what would cause it to die? repairing a k4600 that's about an hour south of me and have to do it in trips. the fuse @ f901 is blowing. HOT is good, X601 appears to test good. the voltage regulator (TR502 i believe) is bad. i am working on getting one to replace it, but, being that the chassis is not near me, is there anything i should potentially look for that would cause that transistor to take a shit?

the monitor till now was running straight off wall voltage - no iso. could that be the cause of it? i am doing a cap kit on it as well and will be hitting the pins for the daughterboards and any other places with questionable solder as well as putting in an iso, but i just wanted to make sure i have all my bases checked since i'm not able to look at it till a week from weds...

No iso will definitely take out a VR, and probably some of the rectifying diodes with it. Maybe even burned up a resistor there.

If it were me, I'd take the VR, some diodes, and maybe some of the caps in the PS section. And I'd try to take along a known-working chassis to swap in (for a price) if it's not a quick-and-easy fix. You can always rebuild it later at home...

thing is i don't have a 4600 chassis. all i have are 4900/g07 chassis.

now, is it possible to go from the 4 diodes (x601-604) to just x601, like some chassis have? i can get more of the diodes, so that's not an issue, just curious cause i didn't know if there was more to the mod than just 3 less diodes.

and i am capping it with a bob roberts kit, so all the caps in the power section should be covered. i wish my wizard of wor had a 4600 instead of a 4900 like my old one did, then i'd be able to test it at home rather than working on it from a distance.

and being that the HOT is good, i'm tempted to think the flyback is ok.
