Dead Hanterex Polos, and What Preventative Maintenance to Do?

I have MK2 and KI cabs, both with the Hantarex Polo monitors.

Both of these monitors are dead. No heater glow, no HV whine, nada. Fuses are good, but that's all I've been able to test with the monitors still in the cabinets. These particular cabinets sure make monitor work tough.

I read in another thread about the HOTs being a VERY common problem with these, and ordered the suggested Mouser replacement. Here's the thread: http://forums.arcade-museum.com/showthread.php?t=158491&highlight=polo+hot+mouser&page=2

I was wondering, while I have the chassis out, what other cheap fixin's could I try? Or what other very problematic parts should I go ahead and replace to save further headaches?

Thanks in advance

mod says all he's ever done was cap Polos and it made them work again lol. not necessarily true though, as I've done that before (it was actually my very first cap kit I did) cause I have a Polo that repeatedly eats HOTs, it's actually been all across America for service 3 different times by 2 different people (the last being Chad).

I don't know what the deal is with that one, but I had a 33" one that's NEVER been worked on before quit, and the flyback had a gaping crack in the side of it, and another that I bought from someone else that I wound up rebuilding with spare parts and caps. the one I bought on the cheap actually had a good flyback, parted that to the 33" one as I was desperate and had no replacement handy that weekend lol. THEN I took another flyback off a 27" chassis that cadillacman just gave me to fix that one, and then I had a monitor for my KI2 again lol however there was another transistor and some large filter caps that I had to change out on that bought/unknown-condition chassis, cause I had no horizontal adjustment control and it had TERRIBLE blooming. I parted those from the 27" chassis and it works beautifully now.

I still have to rebuild my original KI2 Polo chassis. that one for whatever reason makes the fuse glow orange on power up, it does nothing, no ticking if I remember correctly, and somehow that fuse still tests good. I don't know how.

cadillacman's chassis, the HOT tested bad, and I don't have any 27" tubes anyway, so I just chopped that one up for parts.

so as you could have guessed, it's either a HOT or a flyback that's the culprit. if replacing those doesn't fix it and you have a chassis like the one I've had fixed by PNL and Arcadecup to repeatedly fail again and again, it's probably something in the power supply section, which becomes increasingly more difficult to figure out.

so my recipe for preventative maintenance is probably just getting the flyback/cap kit from Bob, and installing both. there's 2 different designs for the plastic piece the focus wire goes in, one of them you just pop it open from the sides, and the other I can't even remember wtf I did to open that. had someone on here ask how to open that cover a few months back and I didn't have the answer cause I'd never replaced a flyback on a Polo yet. lol

and replace your HOT with that magical cooler-operating one that someone found. should be fine.

Mecha!, I have been teasing you to ship me back your polo for over a year now because I was losing sleep over it!. I even gave you my ups account # so you wouldn't have to pay for shipping. I know it's something lame and I will set it right and solid for years to come!.

another quick, lazy question...

is it possible to get the chassis out from those Midway cabinets w/o removing the monitor, or is it worth just pulling the big 25"er.

you can do it leaving them in. a majority of the cabs I work with are those Midway kinds, lol. if you're gonna do a lot of adjustments with white balance or anything else later though, you might just be better off pulling the monitor out and having a big mirror handy.

some people might not be able to pull the chassis with the monitor in, due to inability to flex in those weird angles to get up in there. so uh, idk, pull the monitor? make sure you have someone to help you take it out/put it back in.
