So I had some weak coils, and bought replacements from pinball life. I replaced the launcher yesterday, as it couldnt make it all the way up the ramp. I just pulled the new coil out of the package, matched the wires to the old, and bolted it in, as I got a complete assembly. After I fired it up, the first shot launched fine, the second I noticed a pop bumper went with it, then the launcher coil fired and stayed out. I shut the machine off immediately. The new coil was pretty hot, and I noticed it did not have a diode on it. I transferred the diode from the old coil to the new, and there was no change, as soon as I turned the game on, the launcher coil shot out and stayed out.

So my question is, before I burn up anything else trying to fix it, where should I go from here? If anyone local wants to earn a few extra $$ and take a look at it, im hiding from the office today, and can pay in either parts or cash.

So I pulled and tested Q5, R15, and D17 in the ppb, and q44 on the cpu board. All were good. Reflowed all pin headers while I was there on both boards. Noticed F6 (250v 5a) was a fast blow fuse, and blown. Should be a slow blow. I need to get a replacement. Pulled the diode off the coil, tested good. Coil tested at 5.7ohm (labeled 5.72 on the side). I can get a better measurement with my lcr meter after I get more 9v batteries (radio shack here I come!)

So in the meantime here, I disconnected the launcher coil completely and powered on the game. On powerup, the kicker fires repeatedly in about a .5hz cycle. As soon as I start a game, it stops. Aside from me shoving the ball up the ramp, everything else seems to behave normally. Keep in mind, this is with F6 on the ppb completely missing (all I have on hand are 2.5a). I havnt replaced it yet. Just burned a brand new set of roms for the machine (v1.01 roms in it atm) to load in as soon as we figure out the coil.

Ill get ahold of the right fuse first. Ill try a fast blow replacement first, and if it blows, ill go with the factory spec sb. From there, ill reconnect the new coil with the diode, and if it has any trouble, move over the old coil.

Ok, so I popped in F6, no change. I checked the trough switch, its not stuck. I put my meter on the wires dangling for the launcher coil, and a steady 71vdc. Seems its stuck on high voltage. Im ordering a new set of transistors (may as well just replace all 5 of them w/ new nte393's while im there) anything else I should get while im ordering to be on the safe side?
