I have a Daytona USA Deluxe with the 50" Mitsubishi Rear Projection Monitor. The game itself works fine, but the monitor keeps shutting itself off. The red led is still on, so I know the monitor has power. I know this is a known problem with these monitors and its some sort of thermal/overload protection. The question is "Is this a quick fix to replace a certain part?" Or could it be several different things?

Model #: 50P-GHS31

My local TV shop estimated about $300+ depending on whats wrong and if parts are even available...and I can buy a new (nused) one for $200.
Does anyone know if the Hitachi's are more reliable on these old SEGA ones?

Debating on parting out/selling the old one or fixing it.
I can solder and replace things but don't have the diagnostic knowledge or tools :)

I have a printed copy the SEGA service manual if anyone has one and can reference out of that.
Any help would be appreciated.

the Hitachis are probably the worst of the 3. I just had one serviced back in April, the convergence ICs took a shit on it. the TV repair people only charged me for the initial service call, when they installed the ICs and saw how fucked the dynamic convergence was on it, the repair guy thought the red yoke was bad (??)

upon closer examination, they found that a red yoke doesn't exist anymore, and I didn't have to pay for the rest of the job because it wasn't 100% fixed. I half-ass fixed the convergence myself (took about 3 hours), the blue projector looks kind of shitty, I don't know if it needs fluid or what the deal is.

giving a tally of the 50" games we've got and their mfg's

Wave Runner: Toshiba (auto-convergence is your friend -- cabinet design is stupid, I can't get at the TV controls to turn the red down, lol)
House of the Dead: Mitsubishi (looks great, has tons of mileage)
Top Skater: Hitachi (see above)
Eighteen Wheels: Mitsubishi (outer convergence is FUCKED and I don't see any controls to adjust it and there was no remote, I don't think Mitsus came with remotes)

as for the shutoff, the Eighteen Wheeler one did something like this last year. just unplugged it for awhile, plugged back in, and it mysteriously came back on. no problems since (knock on wood)

the RPTs are pretty taboo around here, only person I know that's dealt with these is probably cadillacman, he actually did a projector swap on a Star Wars Trilogy Arcade I think... pretty ballsy, lol

I'm not sure if it's a cap thing or not. is it common at all for people to replace the projection units on these?

if you can get a good working monitor for $200 GRAB IT NOW!!!!

i agree with mecha, i like the toshibas.. the auto converge is sweet!!!(if you can find a remote lol)

if your old monitor works but shuts down after a few mins you could try caps(theres a piss ton of them though on these mabye check for bulged ones and try those first) and check it for bad solder connections.

You even might be able to go ghetto and add a fan or two in there blowing on the boards to keep them cool.

Yes on mw sw i had a toshiba with something wrong( no turn on at all) after looking for awhile i found a toshiba monitor from a top skater. bieng i wanted to keep the sw art, i gutted both monitors then installed the good guts CAREFULLY into the sw monitor box. It took me a few hours to get it dialed in but i did get the pic looking pretty nice!

best of luck!! WOrking on those projection monitors sucks.

also doing shop for monitors by game name only, most of these games had an option of 2, 3, or 4 different monitors. As far as i can tell, sega just used whatever was available at the time.

I've repaired a few of them (I just rejuvenated and adjusted the convergence on my Top Skater tonight). I've had one that would shut down after a couple minutes, but when it did, the screen turned really bright red. I found the red "screen" pot just needed to be cleaned (turned back and forth a few times).

From conventional monitor thinking... shutdown is usually caused by the B+ going too high, so if you can find a B+ adjustment, try turning that down a little (cap value drifting could cause it to be right on the edge).
