I've finally got the power edition... Or at least it should arrive tomorrow! I'm really looking forward to it... Adding a little change up to a great game.

What do people think of D2PE?

The only negative ( I believe ) is they replaced the original beginner track... It would have been nice to keep it and to have added the more classic track.

What other changes Are there besides listed below?

Harder AI
slightly adjusted physics
new combo track
added hornet car
changed name/graphics of gum car
more talking from pit crew ( how much? )
small modification to a "hard" turn in expert track

thanks!

Power Edition is superior to BOTE. While I love the beginner track on BOTE, the addition of the challenge track and the almighty Hornet trumps the awesomeness of the fantasy track. Unfortunately, the realistic oval Sega put in place of the fantasy track is bland with a capital B.

As for the crew chief chatter, he is in your head much more in Power Edition. I personally love it, but some don't care for it.

Did you acquire the entire boardset, or just the upgrade? I keep a couple spare BOTE boards on hand just so I can quickly switch back when I feel like playing the fantasy track. Regardless, I think you'll enjoy PE much more than the original.

Good to hear. Thanks for your thoughts. I believe additional chatter will be positive improvement...

I haven't had luck finding a reasonable model 3 boadset... Or even just a model 3 rom board. I'll be replacing the roms and not going back to bote too soon.

Some day I'd like to find a boadset with sega rally 2.

I have both a power edition machine AND the Sega Rally 2 boardset to run in it. It is the second Daytona 2 that I have owned. Right now, it is still out in the workshop waiting to be cleaned up and shopped out. Although it was in an arcade environment, and not on a route, it has a lot of dust on it. I have been lazy lately...

Lee, time to clean it up and enjoy it... :)

Judging from response to this thread, there isn't much love here for later 1990's racer stuff... seems more focused on 1980s, which is still cool.

Yeah, not many here care for the newer games.

Anyway, did you get the upgrade yet? Make sure you post your impressions when you get a chance to play it.

Also, as Lee pointed out, you should try to come up with a Rally 2 boardset (Super GT as well) to change things up. The great thing about the Model 3 platform is there's plenty of great drivers, and all it takes to enjoy them is a simple board swap. I've been fortunate enough to get most of them (still missing LeMans 24 and Harley), and they all have unique traits and different experiences. Many claim Model 2 was the high point for Sega hardware, but I think M3 is where it's at.

Got it but will be unable to install it until this weekend :( I'll post thoughts when it is installed.

I'd _love_ to get some other board sets, but they are hard to find and expensive!

Radiac, you owe me a personal email!! :)

I have really wanted to try the original BOTE. I have a D2 PE and I'd like to try the different beginner track. I think the revised beginner track is boring as heck. I'd probably like the eye candy in the original beginner. I never use the Hornet car or the multi track, but I'd kinda hate to give it up for guests.

I got back in town last night and installed the D2PE roms... working great!

Comments on install...

1) I forgot how painful it is to pull 41 roms and insert 41 new ones
2) I had a little problem with the D2PE security board. When I unscrewed the D2BoTE security board, I found out those screws were held in place with nuts. The nuts just fell down onto the board underneath the security board. Pain in the ass to get them out --- no accessibility. I didn't want to turn D2 on with some metal nuts sitting on the video or cpu board, so I needed to unscrew the cage, tilt/shake it, until they came out. Even bigger pain to try and secure the new security board using them, so I didn't. It's currently held in place with the (pretty large) PCB connector. Will probably need to take the whole board stack out if I ever decide to address this. Anyone ever have this problem?
3) Booted first time... I didn't botch any of the roms :)
4) Not surprisingly, it went back to default and lost my high scores. Makes sense.
5) Also didn't pass self test the first time... this worried me for 2 or 3 seconds. Then I realized it was complaining it couldn't find another D2 to communicate with. I went into setup, made it a standalone configuration (and also set it for free play).

Comments on gameplay

1) I like it! Definitely an improvement in all ways (with one minor exception)
2) My only gripe: they should have kept the original beginner track AND included the new NASCAR track. ROM size issue, I suppose.
3) I _do_ like the new NASCAR track. I find the realistic track/backgrounds really makes the race seem more competitive, fast and tense.
4) My favorite feature is the new challenge track. It has great variety and is a blast to play.
5) Is it me or does the hornet car handle like crap? It has been a LONG time since I played the original Daytona... perhaps it handles the same. I found myself crashing into all the walls. But I only tried it a couple of times.
6) Sound effects are definitely modified... engine sounds seem much more realistic
7) The cars seem to have more realistic movement. While I cannot do a side by side comparison, I believe you can see and feel the suspension much more with D2PE over D2BoTE.
8) The additional chatter from the pit is nice and mostly helpful. I was expecting a bit more variation, however.

In summary, overal the D2PE just feels better and is more enjoyable. Definitely a good upgrade. That's my opinion after about 15 or 20 games.
