Hey guys, I need some serious assistance with my both of my Data I/O 288s and getting them to talk to the software correctly. I had it set up correctly at one point, but now I've basically had a brainfart and I must be missing something when I set it back up. Everytime I try to send a Blank Check (or any other command from PROMlink), I get an error message in PL that it can't contact the programmer on COM1. Here's my setup:

  • Programmer settings: Data I/O 288 on Computer Control (32 pin module installed), Port settings as 9600/none/8/1 (I have two 288s and have tried them both separately)
  • Cable settings: DB9 female to DB25 male serial nullmodem cable with only Tx, Rx, Clr, Req and Serial Gnd lines connected (as per the manual), connected to an Sabrent FTDI-based Serial to USB cable
  • PC settings: COM1 (using virtual COM port from the above cable, "Load VCP" checked in Serial Converter under USB Devices in Device Manager), 9600/none/8/1 under Windows 7, running the patched PROMLink 6.10 from MikesArcade and DOSbox 0.74; using known-good drivers from the CD that came with my USB cable
  • DOSbox settings: Serial in config file set as serial1=directserial realport:COM1, serial2=dummy, serial3/4=disabled
  • PROMlink settings: Programmer/Host ports both set as COM1, 9600/none/8/1, Programmer type set as 288 32-pin

I have also substituted a PL2302 chipset-based Serial to USB cable in place of the FTDI-based Sabrent cable, tried two different Serial null modem cables (one storebought, one I made using gear from Radio Shack and using the instructions found in the manual), tried it on three different computers (Windows 7, XP and FreeBSD)...I've even tried reverting to older versions of DOSbox, PROMlink and even the drivers for the USB cables, to no avail. I've tried both of my 288s separately, tried using different modules, I've even tried running the DB9-to-DB25 serial cable straight into the serial port on an older computer, bypassing the USB adapter completely.....nothing. "Can't contact programmer on COM1: 9600,n,8,1" is all I keep getting. Is there something I'm missing? A setting somewhere?

On the programmer you have to hit the select arrow to get to computer control then IIRC you must hit enter. I forgot to do that a lot.

lol Yep, I always make sure to do that Doug. I know it's correct when RS232 disappears. I'm literally stumped as to what could be wrong. I have the two cables I got from you, along with the DB9 male to DB9 female null modem adapter/connector. I've tried running it with and without the null modem adapter to no avail. I have a feeling it's something to do with DOSbox or the drivers, even though the drivers are the same ones I used from the CD I got from you. Dunno man, I'm stumped.

On a side note, DOSbox is trying to interface with the COM port, but gives this error in the DOSbox main window:

Serial1: Desired serial mode not supported (9600,5,n,1)
