Guys just picked up a Secret Service machine, good shape but wouldn't start up completely, it plays the vocal message but the PIA light just flashes as does the Blank light, 5 volts is constant on.

Some times when you start it up a couple of coils fire and release then fire again, non stop, I am assuming a bunch of transistors need to be replaced but I would assume that on the bench the main-board should start up and the blank should come on when the coil wires are unplugged?

Any help?

According to Data East's manuals, +5v should light up and stay on. PIA LED should light up, then go out and the blanking LED should come on.

If the PIA:

Stays on, bad 6821 PIA
Flashes 1 time, 6064 RAM at D5
Flashes 2 times, EPROM at B5
Flashes 3 times, EPROM at C5

The sound board has its own CPU and will boot without the main CPU booting, as you've found out.

It was the CPU, replaced it with a 65020 and all is good, bit of a slow game but not too bad, music is great!

couple of switch/coil driver issues

Guys I have a couple of coils and lamps that wont light when the corresponding switches are pressed.

The first one if the white house pop bumper, I tested the coil by grounding and it works, tested the switch with a meter and it makes contact, replaced the diode and still no fire when the switch is closed. The switch does not sound when I am using the test mode in the machine.

The second one is the kickback coil on the left drain, the switch tests fine on the meter, the coil fires on both coil test and by grounding, changed the diode. The coil fires on the machine test but the switch does not sound when depressed on the machine test.

The upper switch to light the Y in SPY is also not working, the switch tests fine with meter but not in the machine test, changed the light bulb and it tests ok when a light test is performed.

Any ideas? I am obviously down to the board but not sure if its a drive transistor on the switch or on the coils?
