I am having issues with the +5 on the power supply to my 91 data east batman pin. When i test them, they read 3.5ish. i also have a +12 that is not reading anything. Does anyone work on these? or Does anyone have a working one to sell? or Is my best bet to buy a new one?

Thanks for the replies.

They are pretty easy to fix and it is usually pretty inexpensive from a parts standpoint. Your bridge rectifier on the power supply is probably out. Do you have a multimeter?

I do have a mulitmeter, what should I check. I ordered a new transistor, some people say it could be the rectifier or the 5vdc regulator power filter cap. What is your thought.

See this section, Testing Diodes and Bridges:

Yes, it could be all those things. Since you weren't getting +12, that is what made me think of the bridge. It is always a good idea to change C2, the little 100 uF 25v cap no matter what.

Thanks for the info! I guess if I am changing a couple, what is a couple more. I have never soldered a board before. Any tips?

get someone else to do it - practice soldering on a junk PCB, don't dive straight into this or you might destroy it
exactly right. Have someone replace the caps for you. My DE Batman was +5 was fluxuating from +3 to +9. Replaced the caps and now its right at +5

You need a good temperature controlled soldering iron to reliably do board work. But the thing is, you are just as likely, if not more likely to damage a board when removing the bad components. So practice is a good idea, especially removing stuff.

Since I do not have much experience soldering, should I pay $65 + parts to get it fixed or should I just buy a replacement board for $120?

I just had a similar problem. everything worked but had no +100v for the display on my DE Simpsons.
Ended up just buying a new pinscore board from Marco for $99, went right in, worked perfect.

Oh, and, I've got my board, complete with no 100v for sale if you decide you want to tackle it alone and want practice... pm me.

An update, I repaired mikdawg's power supply. C2 was out. I replaced a few other of the electrolytic caps that are near the heatsink and get baked. I had to repin CN1, CN2 and CN9. Everything else looked good, it measured and play tested fine. His game is back up and running.

Update 2

Stangbat help me get this pin up and running in no time flat. Not only did he fix my power supply but he also fixed and updated my CPU board and the PPB board. His turn around time to get my board back to me was very fast and his knowledge is very good. If you need work done on your pin, he is your man.

Thanks,
Erik
