it's been stuck since I got the game a while back. I had previously disconnected it and blocked it but went to fix it today. coil locks up as soon as game is powered up, with coin door closed. I replaced the coil, the tip36 on the psb at q5, the tip122(with a tip102) on the CPU at q25, and it's little baby transistor np4401 at q25. It's still locking up. Could the switch cause this? The switch works fine in the switch test, and also during a game. It causes the game to say " raise or fold" which is normal. I'm stuck now... Any suggestions?

hope this helps

i may be stating the obvious, but in general the transistors will turn each other on smallest to largest to complete the coil circuit to ground via the switch matrix which would trigger the smallest transistor, either the switch matrix is triggering it or something else is causing it to go to ground and complete the circuit. I would try to disconnect one of the wires to the switch first this takes the switch completly out of the circuit and test then if needed.... unsolder the emitter lead of the smallest transistor, see what you get and go from there working your way up.....to the largest transistor.
bottom line you need to figure out what is making the circuit complete

Thank you... That does help. I have been assuming the switch works, but I will take it out of the loop. hopefully it will not lock on then, then I will know to troubleshoot or just replace the switch. I have a few extras so hopefully. Working all night, but I may have some time in the morning to take the switch out and retry it. Fingers crossed! it will just be a pain to go through all the transistors, as they are in the back box, and I would have to keep pulling the CPU, reinstall it, pull up the play field, rehook up the coil.... You get the picture

I was hoping you wouldn't see this question, Pud! It's working great, we have be playing almost every night while we are working out. I wasn't too concerned about the up kicker, but everything in my Cade is working now, so I thought I would throw a little time at it. I was planning this weekend to change out the rubbers on it and completely clean the playfield, but thought I should fix this coil first.
when I went to post this question, wifey said "hope that guy who was looking to buy it doesn't see your question, he will probably be glad he didn't!". Now you making me look bad!

lmfao!!!

just giving you a hard time, bud. i sincerely hope you get it working. hell, i just wanna see some vids!!! :)

dont feel bad doodle, i cant geet my multiball working yet, i think the motor is shot but havent had time to mess with that

on yours it sounds like a switch issue for sure

well I took the switch out, coil still locking on. I can at least leave it all hooked up and just use the coin door to turn it on and off, via the high power disconnect. The switch is working correctly, I guess I'm gonna have to go back and diagnose the transistors, laborious! Im gonna mess with it later tonight. I've been working a lot of nights, and I'm off tonight, so probably won't be going to sleep too early anyway.

if you can isolate which switch in the matrix is causing this lock-on

then replace the resistor/transistors associated

Been reading this section of the repair manual, what you guys think?

"Special Soilenoids" Problems (Trickiness on CPU Revision 3 Games).
Before CPU board Revision 3, the six special coils were not CPU controlled. Instead simple circuitry was used to sense and turn on the special coils. With the introduction of CPU Revision 3 (Back to the Future and later), the special coils became CPU controlled ("non-reflexive" circuitry). However to keep the CPU boards backwards compatible, the old special coil circuit was left intact on the Revision 3 CPU boards (even though Revision 3 games did not use it).

On games Back to the Future and later, there is a potential problem with this backwards compatibility. The old special coil circuitry can be damaged, and cause the special coils to lock on. This can be very frustrating. For example, say a pop bumper coil locks on immediately when the game is powered on. After replacing its associated TIP122 transistor and the 2N4401 pre-driver transistor, and checking the coil's diode, the coil is still locked on! So go back a step further, and replace the 7402 chip at location 12A or 12B. And still the coil is locked on. Finally go all the way back, and replace the 6821 PIA chip at location 8H or 9B. Yet still the coil is locked on!

The problem could be in the parallel, but unused, old special coil circuit! If just one of the small capacitors at locations C40 to C45 (.1 mfd) shorts, its associated coil can lock on. This is a very common, but confusing problem. Also, one of the diodes at locations D1 to D6 (1N5234 or 1N4735, 6.2 volts zener), or the resistor pack at R24/RA24 (4.7k x 8) can short (less likely, but still worth checking). In CPU Revision 3 games, these components are unused, but they can still become damaged!

Sounds like maybe???????

I slept in too long today so I'll be up late tonight. I'm gonna strip and clean the play field, and replace the rubbers. I'm gonna think more about this upkicker. everything else works flawlessly, of course this can't be an easy fix!!!!!!!

New parts can be bad or fail, and the transistor that drives it, be sure you don't have a weak trace or crack in trace to the three legs. That tends to blow them up.
LTG :)

I had a DE Jurassic Park with 2 stuck coils. I changed out the transistor and pre driver and the coils were still stuck on. Break out the schematics and work your way up the chain. Assuming your switch and coil are good, look at the chips above the transistors. I had to replace 2 chips that also blew and then they worked fine.

Ok, I seriously doubt anybodys still interested in this thread, but for my own pride, I wanted to end it, with the problem fixed. My multiple transistor replacement, diode replacement, and coil replacement were all not necessary. as in problems with other games, I went to square one, which is the schematics. It ended up being that the up kicker wires, where they attach to the PPB board, were in the wrong pin locations, however it actually was understandable. This is why. The schematic shows PPB plug J8 to have 12 pins, with 2 cut out, for keys I imagine. On the PPB board itself, the j8 plug is labeled right below it with numbers 1-10. The label obviously doesn't count the two blank keyed pins. however, the schematic shows wires, incidentally the laser kickback wires, to be at locations 11 and 12, which is correct, however on the PPB board, those locations are labeled 9 and 10.

Basically, because of the keyed blanks, and the schematic not matching the labels on the PPB board, the up kicker wires were on pins 7 and 8, instead of the pins 5 and 6, which they were supposed to be on.
so I would like to say it was not my fault, or misdiagnosis, it was an error, or inconsistency in the schematic compared to the PPB board.

Game is now 100%, and is very very fun. Perfect play field, perfect back glass, new lockdown, new locks, new PSB, newly painted legs and coin door, new rubbers, all new lights, new super expensive DMD, few new coils, and very nice cabinet.

This has taken months to get this game 100%, but I can still say I did it all myself. I think I have somewhere around 1200 in it now, which is acceptable. And to think, I was willing to sell it to Pudluther a few months back for 600. Glad I didn't!!!!!! What can I say, his name is Pud?!?!?!?!?! Lol

Pud, I haven't forgot about you wanting a gameplay video. I'm working on it, my home Internet is dead right now, and I can't really upload videos with this Ipad, but I'll get on it
