I've got a Ninja Turtle machine and the dot matrix display works fine after a few minutes. But if the machine has been off and gets turned on, there is no display at all for about 2-3 minutes. After a few minutes the display slowly starts working again (usually the lower right corner starts working, and gradually the whole thing works).

What would cause that? Do i need a new DMD? A resistor or cap somewhere going out?

Display is probably outgassed. When it warms up, there's enough pressure to activate the display elements. A new DMD would probably solve it; you can try swapping one in from another game first to be sure.

Connections?

If the power supply is like stern
you should check the display power board
for bad connections at the connector pins
and the transistors are solder in good.
Of coarse you can monitor the voltages
to see if they come up slowly
or some missing all together then show up.
Good Luck

What exactly would cause the voltages to "come up slowly"? Bad connections also wouldn't give any consistent 'warm-up' behavior. If you know anything about DMDs, this seems to be a classic case of outgassing.

From my experience is which alot with DMD's.
Based on the symptoms that were given..
I agree with Playpin35..Homepin..
and you to sub the display, BUT only after the voltages are monitored..
We will see after the problem has been fixed won't we!!

OK, but outgassed DMDs are the number 1 cause of this "warm-up" behavior. Even more likely with an older display from DE days. I'd bet you a beer on this but, more sensibly, if you're ever in NYC feel free to come by for cold beer and pinball!

Rebuild the HV DMD board.. Parts or kit is cheap.. Great Plains electronics was selling them for awhile.. It's like capping your arcade monitor, every pin needs it done..

Hopefully your DMD isnt outgassed.. As those are the expensive hard to find ones I think?

i think this game has the hv board on the i/o board have to look at it.
but for the new models the power/hv board was a problem ,but when the
outgassed they run hot and the hv board takes the heat and it too runs hot..
If any dmd even looks bad then replace it makes the game look better
with a nice display..

I guess he's not talking to us how many peolpe are talking to him??

Agreed, this is usually power. The DMDs usually won't work at all or have lines missing if they are "broken". Other problems like wavy lines or patterns and slow starts are on the other side of the cables.
