Two questions...
1. Any idea when this is going to be released?
2. How will this compare the the NeoSD? Pros and cons?
I'm not a member of the Neo Geo forums or the Darksoft forums, so any quick summary would be helpful here. Thanks.
No compatibility issues with a 4 slot mobo like the current multi-in-1?
Should have been released already. But we expect it soon. Darksoft delivers even if it is late. The wait is well worth it.
NeoSD loads one game at a time to flash memory which is typically slower. If you are ok with playing one game at a time, the NeoSD will work fine for you. Additionally, NeoSD devs have hinted that they may be moving forward from the NeoSD as they have not been able to produce much of a windfall from their efforts. I believe their team is comprised of go-getters and hired development talent. I am not sure. What this means is that what the NeoSD is now is what it will always be, IMO. Seems they are looking at other arcade systems that may make their efforts worthwhile.
Darksoft is a talented engineer who has a passion for arcade gaming. He has long been a member of preserving arcade games through the efforts of the MAME initiatives. As such, he is used to lending his talents pro bono. The importance of this is that, throughout the viable lifetime of the Neo Geo Multi, your product will be fully supported by him even expanded upon (he just made a breakthrough with his CPS2 multi). Of course, he can't do this without being in the black, but I don't think his first goal is make money based on his CV. Many of his works have been released for free (CPS3 Super BIOS, Naomi Net Boot games, Atomiswave-2-Naomi conversions, reproduced CPS3 SIMM's were sold at cost). Because of this, he is able to perform much of the development at a cost to his time, not at a loss to the bottom line. In terms of technical differences, Darksoft's cart will load 3 games at a time to memory. You can switch instantly from one game to the next. For those with single slot Neo Geo boards, this offers a huge advantage. The drawback is that at startup, the games will have to load each time. But, since he is not using flash memory, instead is using SDRAM, the load time is very fast even for 3 games. At some point in time, he shall open-source his cart's code unleashing the expanded memory to homebrew. You can expect to see dev's utilizing the expanded specs that are currently slotted for the UI and the 3 games to make one great game on the beloved platform; this isn't a statement of folly either.
And, it is going to be priced close to the NeoSD.
Darksoft's arcade-projects.com forum is the best internet forums in any hobby that I have interest in, hands down. Has some really genuine people there that will just help others get started. I am into a lot of hobbies. So I don't throw that testimony out easily. You should join the forum if you want to get the most out of your arcade toys. You won't regret it.
Neo-Geo.com is a good forum, as long as you aren't a newb. If you are a newb, those guys will hone in on it and send in the antibodies to kill you off as an infestation.
The kit is out, at least the beta batch while they fix some bugs with the 'fat' boardsets. 5 so far I think.
I have mine since last week, just waiting on some caps to refurb my project monitor. Pretty much the same thing as the Doyle kit, just 1 chip to swap and a small satellite board that I think plugs into the dongle header.
Whoa. Thanks man- exactly what I was looking for.
There is a pre-order, but I don't know if that is really valid. It acts as more of an interest list, TBH. His last multi (the F3) was released with a "pre-order" that Brentradio set up. Basically, it was first come first serve. I believe there is still units available.
I think since brent started this thread here and frequents the other forum at the same time, as soon as it is announced there, brent will update this thread here. So you'll know if you subscribe this this thread here and won't to order it. Brent is a swell guy and is good at doing that.
I'm happen to announce that......presales are open!!!!
